Academics call for cancellation of charter, 200 laws

BANGKOK: -- A group of 11 academics Monday petitioned the government to review more than 200 legislations enacted by the National Legislative Assembly on grounds of having incompatible principles with democratic rule.

"Many coup-sponsored laws are in contrary to democratic rule and would impinge upon the political system," a petitioner Woraphon Phrommikbutr said.

The petition was filed with PM's Office Minister Choosak Sirinin who is in charge of legislative affairs.

Woraphon called for the cancellation of the 2007 Constitution and laws scrutinised by unelected lawmakers. He also criticised the junta for establishing the Assets Examination Committee, whose mandate, he said, adversely impacted on the justice system.

After receiving the petition, Choosak said the government might form a special panel to vet legislations passed during the seizure of power.
