any one have a rough idea of the cost of a fairly basic site, around 10 pages with 6 of those being used for different types of news updates, done by a back end system and php mysql, a photo gallery page and attached forum. Cost would include graphics and design as well as the structuring of the site?

In software development for over 18 years, built stock trading software, accounting & tax software and e-commerce software, currently working as a Project Manager for a large Thai Bank replacing the core banking system on a multi-million dollar contract, built thousands of PC's and my first computer was a ZX81. I also remember the internet when it was a university resource.

Yeah, i'm an IT guy, what of it?

You couldn't afford me, i've forgotten more about IT than you will ever know. Plus you sound far to bitter and twisted to even consider as a networking contact.

Neither does the "all farangs are wasters funding their petty life in thailand" generalisations some people are coming out with. :o

But to answer the OP directly, have a search around with google, there's a strong chance that there is some freeware/open source sites that will give you something close to what your looking for, and this forum is usually quite helpful if you get stuck with anything and need some advice/assistance. Unless your looking for a professional design/site i would be tempted to say "Dont pay anything, have a go at it yourself"

One option might well be WordPress, which has a decent range of themes and plug-ins to create a site. With its page {not just posts} support, which some don't realise is there, it could well provide a CMSlite approach to the OP's needs.

Regards

PS given that one debater here advised that he watched 911 from the VIP area of Dollshouse in Clinton Plaza I know who I'd put my money on.

Gmail's SPAM filter is the best I have ever found .. simplified my life .. YMMV. A bit of snobbery?

I use gmail for personal use - really like it.

However for business using gmail, hotmail etc makes you look like an amateur.

Funny how nobody prepared to say how much it will cost them.

All this PM behind closed doors stuff.

Just put your long swingin dicks on the line and give a ball park price and possible provide a website as an example of what you will get for that price.

Easy really.

As I said I do not do this - last time I priced a site like this for my VP's charity it cost me 100 USD from a Phillipine guy i got from Joomlancers and it was good work for that price.

I think Oxfordwill's 200 is closer though

I work in IT but on large scale systems (as do quite a few of other guys on this board) and this is not an area I know - the contracts I outsource and offshore tend to be with the likes of Wipro and TCS - my disparaging remarks are due to some of the chancers I have seen giving out business cards and calling themselves web designers in Thailand.

Though I'll not enter into conversations, let me say on the basis of what posters have said about themselves, I'm pretty certain I've met some of the individuals herein, and so my wager was made with analogue knowledge. :o Now, freelancing over the net is cheaper, but requires that the client knows what they want, otherwise such a process is doomed to failure, albeit iterative. One advantage of the sciptlance aproach is that many {Philippines & India for example} are conversant in English, something here that is less common. One other advantage s getting individuals who are building kudos and ranking in which case they are effectively working below cost, looking to build on their reputation later.

Given what the OP is asking for the I think 200 USD is low end, unless one goes the 100% net route, then it's medium I guess, A sensible all in budget would be around 350 to 400 {let's not forget the SEO element here either} in my view, after all one does want the webbie to still be around when one wants updates, design refreshes etc..

By the by having acted as a consultant to the entities mentioned herein, I would suggest that Web presence s not their forte, since both have not updated their copyright tag since last year :D

Regards

PS No I don't but I know people who do.

Aside from the set up cost, may also be worth considering a maintenance contract to keep the site software up to date and fix any problems that may arise.

Yeah I fully agree, hire a security hole instead :o

You can do a site like that almost for free. Go and download Wordpress from wordpress.org, then download the forum plugin from www.fahlstad.se/wp-plugins/wp-forum for the gallery, I like using this plugin: wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wpg2/.

Those free tools will allow you to get a site like you are looking for up and running within an hour. The next step will be to find a theme that you like, visit themes.wordpress.net/ and find a theme that suits you. If you don't find one there, then move on to the last paragraph.

If you would like, you could probably get your own custom theme made buy posting your request on www.elance.com, www.oDesk.com or on forums.digitalpoint.com. It shouldn't cost you more than about $50 (1500 Baht).

I hope that helps, PM me if you need any help getting that set up.
