Wi-fi Connection To The Garden?

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new laptop from Bangkok. I went with Thaivisa recommendations and bought an Acer. I now need further advice from this community. I bought it with the view of browsing the net in the garden. I am now uncertain as to what I need. I relalise that a normal wireless router will work fine indoors, but what do I need to get the signal to the garden. The spot I will be using most is about 20m or less from the router but will have to go through the wall of course. What do you recommend? I would have thought the normal router would do, as it gives a distance of 60m. Am I right? The guy in the shop that I bought the PC from was uncertain.

Thanks.

If you buy a wireless router class N Mimo or N1 Mimo and a wireless card of the same class for your laptop then i think it should work ok.

use cable...

ADSL -- wifi-router -- wifi-router -- LapTop

-- garden

You will do fine with most wireless modem/routers at that distance. Be sure that you get one with a removable antenna. In case it doesn't work well enough, you can always buy a better antenna.

I'm using a Linksys Wag200G it goes through 3 concrete walls I haven't measured the distance.

Easy set up and 2,300bt.

what is your internet connection now ? modem or modem router ?

I am now a big fan of the WRT54GL ( only 1800 baht ) with tomato firmware - but you would need some one with some technical know how to set it up.

for people who just want to cheaply extend the range of an existing wifi router ( better signal does equate to better speed - just make sure your security is adequate ) try the dodgy brothers solution below - 6-9 db gain

Thanks for the advice. I have a guy coming around to take a look at fixing me a connection later today. However, I am now sat in the garden typeing this to Thaivisa. I turned on the machine in order to upload some software, and found the thing automatically connection to a wireless signal. I have no idea where it is coming from. I don not know if I should cancel the guy thats coming later. Is there any danger in my using an unknown connection? I am thinking that this signal will not be permenant and that I should still set up my own.

Your are using your neigbour's (within a range of 40-100 m) unsecured wireless signal. Some people say it's illegal while others say it's a public access point. When your neigbour finds out somebody else is using his bandwidth, he will secure it and access will not be possible anymore. Advisable is to turn off file sharing on your computer while using your neigbour's network. He could peep into your computer.

Thanks for that advice. I thought that a password we required to use someone elses signal. I will go ahead with having my own connection installed. This does at least answer my original question about strength of signal. The neighbours signal must be coming from quite far away, or at least further away than my own desktop that will be supplying my signal to the garden. Anyway I will use this 'free' connection until I have my own set up this evening.

Thank.

take it as an easy lesson as to why you should set up security on your own access point
