On Wednesday evening police from Pattaya Soi 9 station were called to the front of a restaurant on Third Road where a 33-year-old Thai lady showed them her vehicle and the front driver’s side window which thieves had apparently broken.

The lady explained that she had left her handbag on the front seat of the car while she went into the restaurant to have dinner with her family. When she returned to her car she saw the broken window and noted her handbag was missing. The lady told police the bag contained credit cards, an ATM card and a jackpot for the enterprising thieves in the shape of 50,000 baht in cash.

When police asked why she would leave a bag with so much money lying on the front seat of a car she explained that this is Thailand, not some foreign nation full of opportunistic thieves.

Thailand LooT (Land Of Opportunist Thieves).

But these cases are no different from the tourist who has his hotel room broken into and their Rolex, Hasselblad, diamond necklace and 20,000 euros stolen.

Yeah but he is going to pad out the value of his losses to claim on the holiday insurance. I am assuming the Thais don't have any personal possession/ cash insurance (a simple add-on to your home insurance in the UK), so why do they insist on inflating the value of their losses? Are they trying to gain prestige among their peers by making them believe they are well off?

Amazing how often it happens right before they are due to leave, and are (conveniently) unable to pay their hotel bill (though they somehow scrap together enough cash to make a quick exit to the airport). :o

(not all opportunist thieves are locals)
