This Might Be Difficult To Answer But Please Help

Recommended Posts

How much money would I need to start a company in thailand and get myself and my girlfriend both a work permit for a year? By the way we are both from America. I would like to do this in about 2 years (and I know the laws could change by then, but lets just say they dont). How much all together do I have to have. 2 million baht is out of my price range. Is there companies that help you out with this? How much will all of the fees cost to open it up? I lived there for a little while some time ago and I know the business I want to do will profit around $10000+ a month by researching everything. It is almost an untapped market which I am still suprised about.

So how much all together would it cost me to set up a company for my girlfriend and I to start a company? Do I really need to have 2 million baht between us? Is there an easier way of doing this?

I read the article on the main page but it confused me a little. In america I am used to paying about $200 to set up a company with all the licenses and everything.

Please help. Thank You

My very first post so i'll try not to be sarcastic and post just for the sake of posting.

I attemted to set up a small business with the aid of my Thai GF at the time, and to cut a long story short i cut corners to save money. I had an appointment with a company that advertises in the forum, and after some consideration i decided to put the money that would have cost me to set a company up legit, elsewhere. This was a big mistake.

With regards to the cost etc, seek proffesional advice from a decent company. I may cost u a bit to do so, but i'm positive in the long run it will save you time and especially stress, and of course reduce the risk of being rippped of as i was. My own fault of course.

Since you are both Americans, you should consider opening an Amity Treaty company...This eliminates the 51% Thai ownership required in setting up any other type of company..

It may be worth remembering that those who have made it work probably keep very quiet about it. It bit like only hearing the "bad girl" stories

Agreed. A number of years ago, I myself dropped about 5 million baht into various projects that were all sure winners- mostly export oriented. I was young and had never run a business before. Maybe Thailand wasn't the place to start. Anyway, lost it all, although did gain some valuable experience. Obviously would have been better off just buying gold or a house and waiting. Would have been much more simple and much more profitable.

Anyway, now I'm back to reality, working a 9 to 5 and more or less live month to month. Still in Thailand and still have the dream of my own enterprise. But I'm not eager to rush into anything anymore. To those who pull it off legally and without cheating or lying, I am truly and sincerely impressed. I know it can be done, but like so many things- easier said than done.

Very candid of you to talk of your experience, ChiangMaiThai.

I've been here 11 years. I earn a salary. I send some of it home. I plan to invest not one goddamn satang in any business or any other investment in Thailand. I keep a float of around 100,000 Baht here now no more than that.

Just my personal opinion.

As far as I know from a friend's experience. A "shell" company to allow him to work as a consultant cost him around 30,000 Baht to set up and over 100,000 Baht a year to maintain in VAT, income tax, social fund for ghost employees, lawyer's fees, accountant's fees etc.

Have to say that this is the prudent path to choose, assuming you can manage a decent salary. But still, I do personally know of a number of farangs who have appeared to pull off the business route here. Then again, one never knows the whole story.

I don't mind admitting failures, especially in starting a business in LOS! I wasn't the first and surely will not be the last. I do think that it can be done, especially knowing everything I know now, but it is not as simple and straightforward as it may seem to the newcomer. Especially in the export industry, there is a massive amount of competition, and not just from Thailand. You really must be doing something different or better or cheaper. You must do it consistently, you must completely understand your market and and most importantly, you must be visible! It's all for naught if you have a great product at a great price and no one knows about it.

For some reason Thailand is the catalyst of romantic dreams and visions of grandeur for many farangs. The fact that so many people fail only serves to make the prospect more attractive to a certain breed. For those who pull it off, I am impressed. For those who don't, at least you contributed a little to the economy of the country you fell in love with and probably helped out a couple Thai families and a daughter or two along the way.
