I have a computer I bought second hand about 4 years ago. I has Windows XP and I simply cannot get it to connect to the internet!!

I have Linux Ubuntu on the same computer which works perfectly, so does my laptop on the same system. I have an ethernet hub and ADSL and never have a problem except with this stupid XP!!

I have the original XP CD, I have tried everything. It tells me that the 1394 net adaptor is working and is receiving at 400 Mbps. No packets are shown as received/sent.

I have not installed any service packs, no net contact, I am sure if I downloaded a sp on Ubuntu and tried to install it, the first thing it would want to do is go to Microsoft for downloads.

I tried to install Adobe Acrobat and that's what it wanted, an upgrade.... Why does everything assume the internet is always there??

Because buggy software needs regular updates to keep working. But there again if your computer is stand alone you are probably not suffering virus attacks etc.

Have you cleared any proxy server settings from the previous owner?

I have the opposite problem. I can't make Ubuntu 7.1 work with my E51 Nokia GPRS EDGE even though it recognizes the phone model.

A 1394 adaptor isn't a NIC but an Firewire and do NOT works on normal Network connection with Ethernet cable!

Looks like I need a new ethernet card but why does it work with Linux and not Win XP?

It's probably just lack of drivers, check out the manufacturers website for the latest versions.

XP is probalby using a different network card from Linux.

Have you tried deleting that connection for good and then running "New Connection Wizard"?

If you have access to the internet via Linux etc. you can download fresh XP drivers for the NIC.

When you say that XP can't access the internet do you mean exactly that or the browser that you have running on XP? (Internet Explorer?)

Drop to a DOS window within XP and try "PING www.google.com" from the command prompt.

If it times out then the problem is probably within the XP OS.

If you get a response on the command line, it suggests the browser is at fault.

The linux is likely set up dhcp eth(0) and the windows is config for some kind of ad hoc that used another pc for internet access point.  I would think you just need to do an IP config.  Anyone with a xp in fornt of them that could step by step a connection set-up would clear the problem.  You got hardware and I am sure even an old xp can cannect to what ever the linux is connecting to.  I d get the step by step out but I can't do it from memory and I am not able to boot up an xp right now.  busy devices.

Right-click on 'My Computer' and choose manage

Then click on Device Manager.

Check your network adapter. Is it properly listed with a green icon?

Or do you have a yellow icon? Or is it not showing at all?

It works!! I recalled an old computer I wrecked a couple of months ago and I had saved all the card. I found the ethernet card, plugged it in and it all worked!!

Now I will download the latest update from M-Soft, then I will be able to install Adobe Acrobat and print some stuff which is what I wanted all along!!

Thanks everyone,
