Hi

I have lived in Chiang Mai for the last 4 years and visited various mainland provinces in that time and found Thai culture to persist, despite some areas becoming heavily involved / affected by tourism and adopting western styles.

This week for the first time, I have visited Samui, accompanying relatives from the UK on their first visit to Thailand.

Can some of you experienced Samui folks explain something to me.

Where on Samui will I see Thai culture ? I travelled the west side of the island on a bike and found an alarming irradication of it.

Thanks

Ally

Soi Reggae? :o

There are temples - Big Bhudda, the mummified monk south of Lamai, the one in Choeng Mon with the giant statues. During national holidays Thai culture is on display everywhere and usually ends up washing up on the beaches the next day.

What do you consider examples of Thai culture up in Chiang Mai? Don't get me wrong. I'm not being defensive. I think it might be easier to answer knowing what you are looking for as in, "We have X in Chiang Mai but I didn't see any of that on Samui".

Good point! What do you actually mean?

Excuse me, the last time I was on Samui, I thought that it was No.1 for Thai culture in Thailand.

S$x for sale everywhere.

Drive on whichever side of the road you wish.

Don't bother with lights.

Beautiful black slicks on the road, from the leaking garbage trucks.

Piles of rotting rubbish everywhere.

Corrupt government officials from ever department, not just boys in brown.

Lovely pot holes in the roads (If that's what you call them).

45 degree hill roads,inland.

Crime..it's got to be the best place in the world for criminals.

Yep, wonderful Thai culture.
