I'm not sure this is the right place to post this but any of you guys who live in Hawaii and have a reservation on your flight home to Honolulu and then on to Maui, Kona etc. on Aloha Airlines had better get on the phone to your travel agent ! Aloha Airlines just shut down today with no prior notice.

The US airline industry is certainly a hard business.

Hawaiian Air may honor the tickets. It's too bad. Aloha was a good carrier, but they couldn't keep competing with Hawaiian.

Passengers holding Aloha tickets for inter-island flights will get free seats on standby on Hawaiian Airlines through April 3. Passengers on longer flights will be able to fly standby on Hawaiian at no charge, and United Airlines is offering reduced rates.

"Although they may not get a seat at the time they want, they should be accommodated," state tourism liaison Marsh Wienert said of ticketed Aloha passengers. "We do believe there are adequate seats in our marketplace now that will absorb those seats we will lose by our Aloha Airlines trans-Pacific flights."

Aloha Airlines says goodbye after 61 years of service to Hawaii

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Aloha Airlines announced yesterday that it will be shutting down its inter-island and transpacific passenger flight operations. Effectively immediately, Aloha will stop selling tickets for travel beyond March 31st 2008. The shutdown of Aloha Airlines will affect about 1,900 employees.

“This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii”, said David A. Banmiller, Alohas president and chief executive officer. “Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger business.

“We had no choice but to take this action. We deeply regret the impact this will have on our dedicated employees who have made Aloha one of the best operating airlines in the country. Aloha Airlines was founded in 1946 to give Hawaii’s people a choice in inter-island air transportation.

“Unfortunately, unfair competition has succeeded in driving us out of business, bringing to an end a 61-year-old company with a proud legacy of serving millions of travellers in the true spirit of Aloha. We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal business partners who have supported this company for many, many years.”

Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, responded to Aloha’s announcement: “All of us at Hawaiian Airlines are deeply saddened to learn that Aloha Airlines has succumbed to the ever-increasing costs and demands of today’s airline industry.”Mr Dunkerley reassured travellers the airline would work around-the-clock to accommodate ticket holders displaced by Aloha’s closure.

He continued, “Hawaiian is taking several steps to alleviate the anticipated backlog of interisland travellers and cargo at airports statewide. We have a contingency plan in place and are putting it into action. This includes expanding our daily flight schedule by more than 6,000 seats and staffing up at airports to help displaced Aloha ticket holders get to their destinations as soon as possible.”

“We are maximizing our aircraft and resources to keep interisland travel and cargo moving. Hawaiian can accommodate all of Aloha’s traffic. As Hawaii’s flagship carrier, we recognize our special responsibility to serve the people of these islands.”

Mr Dunkerley noted that Hawaiian is filling any empty seats on its regularly scheduled service with Aloha ticket holders, while adding emergency flights that will run earlier in the morning and later in the evening until the backlog of stranded travellers is resolved.

“We will provide more than enough daily seat capacity to fill the void left by Aloha’s departure and satisfy the demands of interisland travel,” Mr Dunkerley said.

Passengers who do not wish to be re-accommodated by another airline should contact their travel agent or credit card company to request a refund.
