Any suggestions please?

Been using a set-up today with the original True modem MT800 + a Linksys WRT54g. Cut long story short had to download a very large 'zip' 180mb {server image} and had no end of problems, until {touch wood} I started again with the PC connected directly into the MT800. Speed consistent {though only @ 20kb/s} and so far no drop-outs, or restarts.

Should I recommend a new modem +WiFi combined unit, or a new modem only, {I know that is counter intuitive} and if so which?

Set-up is to provide connexion for the PC + 1 laptop.

Regards & TIA

In a spirited attempt to bump this, any suggestions for a 'single box' solution, or alternatives?

I note that some kit can be flashed with new {or variant} firmware, is this a factor worth considering?

sorry mate - didn't notice your thread before

I use the the true MT800 and a wrt54gl flashed with tomato firmware

the MT800 I logged into and set as just a bridge and then plugged it into the WAN port on the 54gl and set that up with my username and account. - I have not found a way to loginto the MT800 once it is plugged into the WAN port of the router , but I have had no need to do so once I changed the initial config.

if you wish to go this route , let me know and I will put the effort into getting the settings etc out of my units and post them.

if your 54g is version 1-4 of the firmware( look at the dataplate) I think you can flash it with the tomato or dd-wrt firmware

Thanks for this, I'm at a different place presently, but will check the firmware etc. later today {Friday}.

Checking the version/model number the WRT54G is {from the firmware perspective} the dreaded v5, which according to the board linksysinfo.org runs VxWorks OS and is incompatible with 3rd Party Firmware, however, I'd still be interested in going the bridge route you describe.

Regards

PS Have just found a page which outlines a flash technique for v5's to provide DD-WRT on the device

Just to add I realised that the Linksys firmware had not been updated in a while so I went to the site and downloaded and 'flashed' the router with the latest version v1.02.5.

For most applications a single integrated CPE (ADSL modem, 4-port ethernet router, WiFi AP) is the best solution. All of the leading CPE manufacturers offer one or more models in this category and most are widely available here in Thailand. I've used several Linksys WAG54G's (multiple installations) for a few years with great success.

I like a single device as I only have to deal with one management system, one power connection (on a UPS) and it is easier to trouble-shoot issues. There have a been a number of threads on this subject, many with other specific model number recommendations.

^ Thanks both to stu {aka Alfred E. Neuman} for the access data, and lomatopo for the one box point with associated Linksys recommendation. I always seem to have bad search karma :o with this site, so I did search for threads before but with minimal success, so if anyone can point me at recent discussions I'd be most appreciative.

OK, looking at this set-up, switched to direct connexion to the MT and no default gateway is presented in ipconfg/all under XP. Have tried 192.168.1.1 to no avail.

Suggestions?

Regards

MT800 with ip 192.168.1.1 and set as bridge and plug the MT800 into the WAN port on the wrt

wrt set as 192.168.1.2 with logins etc

I will get some grabs of my setup and post them - give me an hour or so as I have to do some disconnecting etc

^ Thanks appreciate it. I'm out for a few hours too, so no rush, upon my account.

on the wrt54gl I am still using tomato 1.13 as I have been too slack to up it to 1.17 which is the latest :-)
