I'll be moving to Bangkok in a month, thus far I've only used the internet in Thailand in internet cafe's. I think everyone knows this often should not be considered high speed internet. How is the internet at residential locations? Is there a particular internet provider or service that is faster than the rest?

I did search the forum but couldn't find information on this topic.

I subscribed to a TOT ADSL that is supposed to be 1024/512 or thereabouts.

Best download I got was 200+, I'm talking about overseas sites.

Last Tuesday evening, phone goes dead. Wife calls TOT, they say they are upgrading phone system for the whole district, phone will work again Wednesday afternoon.

It works Wed morning and seems fast. I do a check with 2 overseas speedtest sites. 1 registers 760 / 235 and the other 685 / 225. I repeat the test later the same day and get slightly slower speeds.

The lesson I get from this is that your ultimate speed is not because of the package you sign for, it is the quality of the phone lines that carry the data.

I am not sure whether which ISP you sign for determines which phone lines are used, but I would seriously doubt that every ISP runs their own phone lines in.

I'm in Prawet district. From what little I know of ADSL, the closer to the exchange, the better the signal.

Define fast..

I am getting a solid 1mb of international.. Thats by far the best line I have had in Thailand so far.. Plus its not too expensive..

But if you mean 20Mbit like Europe / US then no, forget it..

Hi LivinLOS,

Your comparison is not fair.

I really doubt you get international 20 Mbits in Europe or US... :o

I have seen speed tests done in the UK off us servers in the 18+ range range... Thats 'fast internet' !!!

I am not 100% sure but my mother gets 8+ Mbits and she would only take a cheap low end package (no idea who the ISP is at all.. Only relying on reports from my brother visiting her) not a SME style biz package.

My speedtest results:

Download Speed: 2014 kbps (251.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 412 kbps (51.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

1000 baht a month TOT. I believe they also have a 5 or 7 Mb package as well, but it is quite expensive.

Pickel,

Those speeds would be fast enough for me. I don't need the 5 Mb, I just don't want something under 1 Mb

It will higly depend on your location.

For instance, I live in Ladprao and use True Telecom 2.5MB (1,230 baht/month). Never had problem and it's quite decent for Thailand (I won't compare it to my HK ADSL line though!).

Now I bought a condo in Ramkhamhaeng and want to rent it with ADSL. I had to use TOT as the condo company has agreements with them. I just opened a 1MB/512KB (590 baht) line 3 days ago and all I get is a horrible 32Kb/512Kb :D Also the line is disconnected every 2 minutes or so.

By the way, I would be glad to hear from anyone living in that area and using TOT to know how their ADSL line is working :o

Yes it definitely is one. (Or another.) The current thai law unfortunately require you to have a licence.

EXAMPLE: You can hang a bunch of access points in your condo and sell the land line(s) to the tenants. (absolutely legal)

Your neighbour (next condo) grab you signal.... can you sell it too?

NO. You have to have infrastructure (Herby a billing server in the building)

Otherwise you are a provider -> NTC licence

That could (not must - depends on which shoe you step) the side effect to get sued as illegal (phone operator) , (and yes the will nail you on skype).

That aside... every international data connection needs NTC approval ... so your 2 MBIT FULL DUPLEX ( 18700THB incl traffic ) is illegal.

You may let better grow large weed plants around your 2,4 m dish

Where was that test conducted.. To BKK or international..

Thats much better than I usually got out of TOT.. Sometimes at night I could get 1800 to sing but that would drop to 700 or so to London.
