I would like my Thai wife to read some thing other than the Thai privately run new's papers to hopefully see a different perspective and more open views . Does any one know of such a web site ( written in Thai ) where she can read un biased Thai and International new's articles.

Thanks

News is inherently biased. It's a common mistake to think your favorite news source is unbiased and that other news sources are biased. Best to know that they are all colored by a certain perspective.

Mate, you should count your blessings that she's reading at all. Or, for that matter, even interested in news and current affairs. Seems to me that a heck of a lot of Thais are more interested in the television and celebrity gossip. Ok, so it's a bit of a generalisation...

Hi, Thanks for the comments, when I said '' unbiased '' may be what I should have said was '' un censored ''

there's been several occasions when ive seen a notable Thai news article reported on by the foreign press , and asked my wife if she has seen it while looking at the ''Thai '' new's channels. she has said no there's been no mention of it.

my wife is like most Thai women is drawn to the Thai soaps like a moth to a flame, but having said that she is also studying for an entrance exam for a Government position , so her education level is some what above the norm . and she seem's to be very interested in Local government . I would like her to just be able to see and read every thing I have access to , but from an un censored Thai language source. :o

I have noticed the same thing. I could be wrong but my guess is that you might be confusing censorship with the media catering to the different interests/priorities of two different populations. Many Thais are simply not interested in the same things that we are (or at least to nothing like the same extent) ... certainly not if it involves "think too much" analysis, big picture thinking, critical debate ...

Hence I would not expect the Thai (or western) media to present stuff that is a big yawn to most of their viewers (unless of course they want to try to educate them and not just pander to the lowest common denominator of taste and intellect ... yeah, dream on).

To give an example Chiang Mai English language media have had regular articles on air pollution. In the Thai media it barely rates a mention (although this is changing a bit in the past year). I don't think that is censorship at work ... the Thais are more likely to dismiss hazy air with the notion "oh it will be OK when it rains". end of story. Now how about some scandal?

Is it different anywhere else in the world? The vast majority of Brits get their 'news' from tabloids more interested in Britney Spears than Dafur; the Americans learn about world developments for the facile bullshit of Fox News.

I dont think us westerners have much to gloat about when it comes to being well informed.

Are you having a bad day or is it the day after a hard night? This generalization is not up to par with your normal remarks to the rest of the world.

DITTO! Rare for one to get beyond the soaps & sitcoms. News outside Thailand? Forget it, unless you've got a University grad.

Thai comic books are rather popular reads for most thai people. :o

Good food for the masses. Hopefully they won't get any dangerous political ideas from them.

I have found that most people become resentful when you try and interfere in the process of where they pick up whatever bias they wish follow. All media is biased and none is the truth. It is just harder to see the bias and lies in something that you are familiar with. My wife would go beserk if I tried to suggest where she got her news from and rightly so. It would sound a bit like the clever white man coming and telling the stupid native that they need to see the world differently.

Skip the news papers and go straight on to reading Pygmalion (Shaw's version)

Just watch The Colbert Report.

That is all the news you need. And it isn't all this liberal mamby pamby stuff you normally get on US TV, it is just the facts, good honest journalism.

Or something along those lines.
