A few months ago I read something on this website about the tightening of regulations, not only requiring an outbound ticket, but an outbound ticket back to your own country - before they'll let you into Thailand. I remember reading about someone who got stuck in Laos, because they didn't have an outbound ticket.

I've been living and working in Asia (China, Taiwan) for a few years. I haven't been back to my own country (England) for over seven years. It's just stupid if they ask me to show a ticket back to England.

I was thinking about going to Thailand in June/July (overland via Laos) and sorting out a Taiwan visa and ticket when I get to Thailand.

Will I be able to do this? I just want a 30 day Visa exemption stamp, arriving overland from Laos - but without showing an outbound ticket.

The outbound to home country was a requirement, for a short period, for tourist visa issue at Penang. A ticket out of Thailand to a country that you have documents to enter is all that is required by law for visa exempt entry. At this time only some Cambodia entry points seem to enforce the requirement.

I would be very surprised if Thai Immigration at the Lao border will ask for proof of onward travel at all. Have crossed many, many times between those two countries (mainly using Nong Khai and Nakhom Phanom) and was never asked.
