System Restore has stopped restoring.

It creates Check Points and Restore Points, but every attempt to actually implement a Restore fails.

I get the message:

Your Computer cannot be restored to: (Restore point)

No changes have been made to your computer.

I've tried different points.. it always fails.

I'm running WinXP Pro, Sp2. It's a legit OEM Version from the USA, and I have the disk.

How can I restore "System Restore" ????

Thanks for your help.

Seems like you need to reboot, turn off SR, reboot and enable it again to kick start it. Rreasons it won't restore could be that to do so will damage your system e.g. you have a virus or problems with norton. Just enter the message into a search engine and you can get some more detail. I had problems with a scanner, unplugged it and SR wouldn't restore. When I plugged it back in again it worked but the virus reason or Norton is what others suggest.

Hi Cs,

I had exactly same problem few days ago, it started with pop up saying "windows explorer has stopped working...."

Tried "system restore" just to get message " your computer cannot resto..." so I decided restoring to company default and my wife fcked it up by ejecting the

disc while com was running,..etc, etc.

I ended up taking my laptop to ACER service center

:o

I suspect this problem started with installing program called "SUPER DVD COPY" .

good luck

JC

ps: I'm on VISTA sp_2

Do you have Norton 2006 or later installed on this PC? If so, read THIS.

Otherwise:

First, try booting in Safe Mode and try to do a System restore from there.

Whether that works or not, try turning SR off/on - you will lose any existing checkpoints.

  1. Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
  2. Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC.
  3. After that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC again.
  4. After that 2nd reboot you should have one new SR checkpoint.

No, I don't have Norton.

Second, now I can't get into "SAFE MODE".

I keep hitting F8 while the boot happens, but I keep getting put into a Blue Screen where I need to pick my Boot Drive from a list of all my Hard Drives and CD drives.

After I choose the drive for my O/S the boot finishes without any problem.

Confused???? I am. :o

OK stupid question but have you got enough free disc space. Happened to me once but no warning or indication from system restore :o now I always make sure there is plenty of free disc space.

I use SUPERAntiSpyware for what it says but it also has a repair feature that I’ve found useful on a couple off occasions.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

From the main menu screen click on preferences then the repair tab and scroll down to “Repair broken safe boot key” and also “Repair broken windows system restore”

Worked for me

:D

How To Enter Windows XP Safe Mode Using the System Configuration Utility

Thanks.. I'm sure that I'll need this info at some point in the future.

But I've managed to 'Restore' "System Restore" using these instructions I found...

At least it's seems to be working now with my test restore... Ill wait a week and let some new restore points create themselves, instead of the test one I created. If it restores next week, I'll be sure that this is a permanent fix... NOTE> You lose all previous Restore Points.. But, so what!!!

To RESTORE "System Restore"

Note: The following file is located in a hidden folder. To view hidden

files follow these steps:

Open Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab, select "Show hidden

files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types",

click OK.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windows\inf folder.

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the

i386 folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard

drive, if it exists.

That's it... Worked for me.. so far.

Thanks for all the help and info.

Thanks for sharing that procedure CS. I am certain somebody (maybe myself) can use that in the future. Glad you got it sorted.
