I have a friend who is arriving at Suvarnabhumi and leaving from Don Muang the next day. She needs airport pick up and would like to be close to Don Muang. She is looking for a hotel for under 2000 baht.

Any recommendations?

Majestic Suites in downtown Bangkok. Only 20min from Don Muang. :o

Isn't that on Sukhumwit?.... at the infamous Nana intersection??? Surely there is a closer hotel to the airport in, shall we say, a less tawdry area for a single Western woman?

Sure why not - plenty hotels at lower end of Suk which are great spots for any traveler. :o

I got the impression from the OP that she (i.e. her friend) was looking for a short stay near Don Muang, not short-time in town.

Try Airport Suite (Don Muang) Bangkok. Booking through www.sawadee.com.

Older hotel but clean and free shuttle to Don Muang.

I would take a cab from the new airport to Ratchadapisek, lots of hotels there, eg Palazzo 1200B, Emerald 2000+ It's a fast ride from Suavarnabhumi and easy to get out towards Dong Mueang the next morning. Check any hotel booking site for Ratcahadapisek, lots of choices in that area. (this is what I always do myself when staying for one night between airport. Just hope one day they will close down Don Meuang or build a fast rail link between both airports...

Even closer to Don Muang than downtown Bangkok or Sukumvit (really!), is the Saphan Kwhai area (accessible by BTS SkyTrain) and a mid-priced hotel (around 1,300-1,600 baht) called Sena Place. The area is kind of run-down, but the hotel is much better, on a quiet back street. Only about 10-15 minutes from airport. Don't get their "airport transfer" package which will cost you an extra 2000 baht. You can get a taxi to the airport from the hotel on your own for less than 200 baht!
