I thought I would ask here as I’ve realised I’ve dropped a clanger :o and was looking to see if anyone can make any suggestions? My wife has been living over here in the UK with me for 7 years and I kept most of my money in an online saver in her account because we earned gross interest as she has never worked while in the UK, this was £70,000 we’d saved for our house in Thailand. What I did (not realising) was I transferred the money to Thailand from her account here to her account in Thailand, the only thing was part of the money was for the 800,000 baht for retirement. I have a fixed saving account in my name in Thailand with 1.2million baht in but can’t vouch for most of it being transferred from the UK, as we used to take cash with us when we came over and deposited it when we arrived in Thailand. I also have a saving deposit account which I’ve had for years which only, has 89,000 baht in the account. We are due to arrive in Thailand on the 29 May so would be grateful of any help and suggestions on what to do about the 800,000 baht needed when I apply for my retirement visa after the 90 day period.

Cheers

It is not likely to be an issue - especially being married to a Thai. You could make a transfer from her funds back to UK and return to your account here and move the old money back into her account if you believe you will need the proof but do not believe it will be required - and you can always stay a few more months on 90 day non immigrant O visas if you need extra time.

Lopburi3,

Thanks for the reply. Do you think I should leave it till I come over? If we went to the immigration before I apply for my retirement and explained what I've done, do you think they would let me know if everything was OK?

It is very hard to get a reading as each officer, or officer/superior, is likely to view things differently. We have not seen many reports of close checking in the case of retirement and do not believe you will have a problem. I would give it a try and if you have a problem, then take action to move money and try again after the three month period. It is not hard to stay here for a few months using visa entry.

If it is a problem and need to extend my visa, do I then have to do a border run? I'm coming over on a Non O single entry.

You could use a multi entry and be prepared - but if single entry you would have to make a border run for 30 days or visit a Consulate (overnight) to obtain a new single entry non immigrant O visa. Although you can probably obtain a 60 day extension from Immigration inside Thailand one time to visit wife so it might not be required.

Ok, as I’ve already applied for my Non O visa and waiting for the return of my passport, I’ll maybe have to try for the 60 days extension. I’ll just come over and see what transpires.

Thanks for your advice so far Lopburi.

Cheers
