Will somebody please let "OldCroc" know that the ice-blocks that he ordered are on their way.......... :)

"Giant Iceberg Headed for Western Australia"

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/09/2766458.htm

Hopefully it will miss Australia and go past and hit and sink most of Indonesia.

Thanks Ken.

We may end up with a cooler summer this year with a giant iceblock parked outside Freo, but I may get a chance to try a bit of ice fishing!

And some antarctic ice in my scotch would be a bonus.

'

I might have to to return to W.A. "Croc" as I have just heard that "whale riding" is going to be the new in thing in adventure tourism. :)

Temperatures across Victoria and South Australia have surged in to mid-40s this afternoon prompting a "catastrophic" fire warning to be issued.

In the south east centre of Keith temperatures hit 44.6 degrees at 3:30pm local time with 44 recorded in Murray.

Melbourne has 43 degrees this hour with up to 44 degrees in rural parts of Victoria.

Haven't heard another word about that iceberg, must have got lost or melted.

Perth is expecting some 40+ weather next weekend.

Are they still "Taking care" of their sheep at those temps?

Not in the middle of Melbourne.

Temperature was 37C at midnight last night.

But Queensland is cooler, so when the pubs throw out, the sheep still shuffle together for mutual protection.

Sheep in Queensland? Them's fighting words Humphrey.

Queensland's cattle country.

And don't waste your time replying to this post with facts either.

When have facts ever meant anything in a post on Bedlam?

Do they have beaches?

Some of the best in the world.

If you don't mind being stung to death by mini-jellyfish.

Or eaten by sharks.

Or caught in a rip and dragged out to sea.

Or being man-handled by big hunky lifeguards. (OK, Patsy, that one's for you)

Or sitting among a thousand others, all wearing three tubes of SF50 sun-screen with a foul smell.

Or driving through an enormous fire to get there, then finding it was lit by the local fire-fighters, 'cos they were bored.

Or having to drive a Holden to get there.

Or being invited to a barbie and being forced to consume at least three stubbies for every sausage.

And have you had barbecued meat pies??!!!

And it's summer now - so if your in Swisherland, you'll have all that lovely snow feet deep in the streets - who needs beaches and sunshine?

Although I already posted this in the topic on books, it might better be suited for this topic as well.

For all you Aussies out there who want to learn something about your own country I suggest reading Bill Bryson's book... "In a Sunburned Country". I would be willing to bet you'll learn something about the history and little known facts about Australia that you didn't know before you read the book. What constantly amazes Bryson is if certain events that have happened in Australia had happened in other countries, such as the USA, then they would be world famous.

Bill Bryson is a well known travel writer from the USA, but he probably knows more about Australia than 98& of the population there. If he wrote a book about Canada he would probably know more than 99% of most Canadians. And, he probably does anyway.

Bryson is a VERY humourous writer who wanders around Australia and pokes his nose into little, second hand book stores and various local museums. He reads various little known ducuments and from there gets ideas of other places to see. He has a lovely tongue in cheek way of poking fun at a few locals and various historians. The book covers a broad range of subjects including history, travel problems, cities, and the strange natural flora and fauna of Australia.

I think you would find most Aussies here have read Bryson's books. They have sold a lot of copies in Australia.

Quite amusing, but I would dispute your claim that he knows more about the country than 98% of locals. :)

We're surprisingly knowledgeable about our country.

Even non-readers can pick up a lot from the box, There have been several programs that have rivalled soapies in popularity. The Leyland Brothers is one example that had a huge following.

Imagine Australia having a land border crossing with Indonesia.

Would make the confiscated tukka at airports small time.

Love the ad.

You could be right, Old Croc. I said "probably" and was only guessing... using Canadians as a benchmark. Aussies are great travelers and I know many Aussies who know more about Canada than most Canadians.

A little known immigration problem is the passage of people through the Torres Straits Islands. Some of the islands are so close to Papua New Guinea they are easily accessible by small boats.

If the illegal immigrant agents ever do a deal with Port Moresby there will be big trouble.

:) Hmmmmm. Business opportunity in the tropics, involving boats.

Hmmmm.

^ Not sure how many boat people you could get on that recently aquired ship of yours, Harcourt. Might have to make a few trips to break even. :)

I remember a few years back we had to sort out about 78 Chinese boat people who ran a ship aground on Cape York and then ran and hid in the mangrove swamps. They came out and surrendered when they worked out it wasn't the best place from which to start a trip on foot to Sydney. :D

I flew virtually around Australia in about 18 hours as part of a massive exercise to move them all to a processing centre in Port Hedland.
