We're top unsurprisingly, but just look at Arsenal..You should NEVER listen to an Arsenal Fan moan about the Engliush National Team when his own Club side is as shameful as this...

Taking the last weekend of the season as a snapshot, the disparity in resources the England manager has at his disposal when compared to his counterparts on the continent becomes quickly apparent.

The final round of fixtures in Italy - the home of the current world champions - saw 7.3 Italians start per Serie A team. In Spain it was 6.9 Spaniards per La Liga side, and in Germany it was 4.9 Germans in each Bundesliga XI.

Those three nations all qualified for Euro 2008 and are once again among the bookmakers' favourites to claim success when the final is played in Vienna on 29 June.

The Premier League, however, rejected any attempt to link England's failings on the international stage with the number of foreign players appearing at domestic level.

Its all a nonesense really and just jealousy on the part of the continentals esp Sepp Blatter and to a lesser extent Platini

They did not used to shout when Serie "A" was the richest league in the world but it really sticks in their craw that the EPL is now - guess what guy's you are going to have to live with it.

Murdoch and BSkyB made it what it is today (with his other sattelite channels) and its what the world wants to watch - the "Globalisation" of the English game has taken place and it will not be rolled back - the analogies with globalisation are manifold - it would take a massive disruption like a major war just like WW1 stopped the growth of international trade then.

The EPL has the advantage of being in English - the 2nd language of most of the world - the branding of the teams and players is second to none in the sports world

The continentals are just going to have to realise at the club level they will be left behind - its a bit galling to see the English national side left behind but all in all I will take the EPL being what it is.

I know the joke in Singapore is that they beleive there are only 4 teams in the EPL but in reality how many other clubs outside the EPL are famous>

Yes you have Real, Barca, the Milan's but after that the knowledge of your worldwide footie fan starts to wane.

Then you have the big Scottish two wanting to jopin in the pigfest of money - s'funny as you want independence in other matters - sorry lads but you are stuck where you are and you will not get in the EPL.

The Euro superleague is now a distant memory too.

Thought it was the so called Champions League , but they just forgot to change the name. :o

LOL - yeah but in the one I am talking about Celtic and Rangers thought they would be playing all season in it :D

Heard Sepp Blatter on the BBC World Service this morning whinging about 4 English teams in the 1/4 final and 3 in the semi and 2 in the final - sour grapes from the old <deleted> thats all it is - if it was France, Italy, Spain etc they would be celebrating the wonderful football.

Its because they can not get their dirty grubby noses near the trough is what is upsetting them

I think the 6+5 idea is the way to go. I don't think its too much of a coincidence that England has a very low local player content (34% english players and 3+8) and the national team is poor but the premier is the best. I would hope if it happens it may even the field a bit instead of the usal suspects winning everything if they have to buy/produce local players. I think they should exctend it further to guarantee a certain number of U23 yrs are in each match day squad to bring youngsters through the ranks more.

Can you remember the last time they had restrictions in Europe - a bit of a farce

How are they going to get it past European Law anyway - yes it might cut down non-EU players but they are buggered about EU players as EU law is totally against this.

BTW: How long has the national team been poor? - not many furriners in post 66 until quite recently

Who can blame the clubs for going foreign. I am quite sure the English talent is out there but their wage demands are absolutely rediculous, far higher than those of the foreign players.

At Newcastle we have a young Geordie who has come through the ranks, Steven Taylor, gone on to captain England U21s, quite decent but certainly nowhere near the finished article. He is stalling on signing a new contract cos he wants more money, the rumour is he is on about £35000 and wants £70000. Now i know this is only a rumour, but i would imagine somewhere near the truth.

I would let him go, buy an experienced foreigner on half the wages and see if some other mugs will meet his demands.

Until the greed goes out of the game then the problem will get worse rather than better.

I rather agree with you - the English players are pricing themselve much too highly - if the restrictions Blatter wants come in then it can only get worse.

Then we would have to implement some American type crap such as a wage pool for a club and then negotiate from there - let the free market reign I say and stop these Euro's interfering.

As a Sunderland supporter I doubt i will ever see my team in the Champions league but so what - its been that case for most of Europe for ever

It really is just sour grapes and nothing else - the politics of envy as the EPL is the most popular league in the world - maybe the most popular sport in the world outside the world cup ie Man U Vs Chelsea in the league had 1.2 billion watching - when serie A or the likes can get that then maybe they will have the money
