I used to laugh this off as an adversity to shoping with my Wife when this problem first started about 8 -9 months ago

But now it has got serious.

Whenever I visit ANY department store, Supermarket or even a gym within five minutes a pain starts in my right buttock , goes into my thigh and eventually freezes my right foot so I am unable to walk any further and have to leave the buliding and go and wait outside.

I even have trouble queing up to catch a plain!

Within 15 -20 minutes of leaving the building the symptoms have gone. I never have a probem like this at home or anywhaere else for that matter...this is really bizzare

I have had an op for sciatica in my left leg, but this feels like its something else.

Obviously I am going to have to seek medical assistance for this condition, but I was wondering if anybody else has ever suffered from these symptoms before and how they cured them before I go?

Cheers

To be honest it's ruining my quality of life right now

Definitely sounds like a psychosematic shopping disorder, I would imagine it's even worse when you go to the gym :o

I have something similar in malls and supermarkets, although my symptoms are a bit different - an exceedingly short temper coupled with an uncontrollable craving for a beer, which always leaves me waiting in the nearest bar for an hour for the missus to emerge.

Seriously though, is it air-con related maybe? Do you use air-con at home?

Trapped nerve, probably around L4 or L5 vertebrae. I had it a few years ago (it started in my right testicle) and walking slowly (like you do in shops) was by the far the worst aggravator. I can't remember the doctor's name, but he has a clinic in his house in a soi behind Seri Center (next to Seacon Square). Pretty much directly behind the store, about 100 yards up on the right.

He fixed me over a period of 8+ visits and about a month or more. Physiotherapy, ultrasound and very gentle traction. Give him a visit, I feel like he saved my life.

Let me know how you get on, and his name if you get it.

Good luck.

I thought it was the former to begin with :o

Yes I do use air-con all the time with no adverse effect

Can you tell me what that op was. I was of the understanding that sciatica wasn't operable. My mother has it now. Any information would be of help. Thanks.

P.S. Good luck with getting your current condition dealt with.

It depends on the cause of the sciatica. I had a partially prolapsed disk which caused sciatica which was operable insofar as the disk could be shaved away from where it was trapping the sciatic nerve. However, in later years build up of fibrous and scar tissue impinges again on the nerve and re-introduces the sciatica; this is not operable or at least the likely consequences (more scar tissue) will outweigh the benefits. Bringing down the inflammation, physio and continuous gentle stretching and flexing exercises keeps it at bay by discouraging the build-up of fibrous tissue.

Best to get proper medical assessment with a good osteopath. Pay no attention to homeopaths, aromatherapists and half-arsed masseuses. Get a professional opinion from someone with experience (not just a diploma from KSR University) and directed physiotherapy. If it is a trapped nerve then they'll probably start you on anti-inflammatories. Try ibuprofen and a gentle regime of stretching and bending until you can get to a real quack. Beware of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) though: discuss the risk of gastric reflux/ulcers with your quack first.

Don't mess about with back problems, get professional help and quick.

I have to agree with 2long, the symptoms really sounds like a trapped nerve.

i have a recurring problem with a trapped nerve between L4/L5, and my symptoms are similar. a regular treatment of heat, ultrasound and improving spinal flexibility helped me considerable in easing the pain, and frequency of the symptoms.

The staff at the Physical Theraphy clinic at Suan Dok hospital on Suthep road were wonderful for me.

.....and when you get x-rays, be sure to have your hip x-rayed as well. For over a year I was treated for sciatica until a good physician insisted my hip be x-rayed and that is where the problem was.

TP,

could be nerve entrappment or a circulatory problem. That it only occurs in situations where you are standing for some time may indicate the latter but both are possible.

I seem to recall you are diabetic? If so then at risk for circulatory problems.

If it is nerve compression or entrapement an MRI of the lumbar spine will show it.

If it is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (not to scare you, but that is a possibility, and a serious one) it can usually be detected on ultrasound or CT

Other possibilities would be circulatory problem in the veins or arteries of the legs which can be diagnosed by physical exam and doppler ultrasound. In that regard would be helpful to know if at the time this happens the leg appears discolored i.e. reddish or paler than usual.

Since these possibilities call for different types of doctors the question ios where to start. If IO am correct about your being diabetic (I could have you mixed up with someone else) then I'd probably start with ultrasound to rule out abdominal aortic aneurysm and check for venous or arterial insufficiency. If all these prove negative then see an orthopedic specialist.

You could do it the other way around, though. One caution if you do: a very high percentage of people have some degenerative disc changes as they age and there is sometimes a tendency to ascribe symptoms to such findings which are not due to that at all. To explain what you describe, they would need to find actual nerve root compression. Some disc problems short of that would not account for it.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out
