MUNICIPALITY OFFICE GROUP STRUCK BY FOOD POISONING IN PATTAYA

A group of 50 visiting municipality office workers from Amnatjarean who had come to Pattaya for instruction in work study were stricken by food poisoning after eating a Chinese take-away meal at their weekend lodging house, yesterday, June 4, 2008. They were rushed to hospital and are recovering. Luckily there were no fatalities.

A Sawangboriboon Foundation Rescue team received a report of severe food poisoning among 50 of a group of 220, who were visiting Pattaya to study work techniques early on the morning of June 4. Due to the large number of victims who were suffering from attacks of vomiting and diarrhoea, Sawangboriboon had to organise a convoy of 10 cars of volunteer rescue workers to ferry the victims to Banglamung Hospital.

Mr. Jitti Rattanapituksook, leader of the group and their spokesman, told reporters that he had brought a group of 220 people by bus from Amnatjarean to study cases concerning community planning work for 2 days at T.klungtumru Chonburi till June 4. He further related that, on the last day, the group had had a dinner party consisting of take-away Chinese table and sea food in the Banglamung weekend houses where they were staying. In his particular house, 30 diners had sat around the table.

After their meal, the individuals had gone to bed early, keen to wake refreshed for their homeward journey the following day. However, Mr. Jitti continued, he had got a report after midnight that about 10 people had severe stomach-ache and were vomiting, with more starting to feel the same. People who were not in a critical condition were trying to help the stricken. Sawangboriboon were accordingly notified.

Mr. JittIn told reporters that he still loves Pattaya and will come again. However, the food poisoning incident would make an ideal case study to convince Pattaya authorities to try to be more careful about public health and people's nutrition.

Doctor said that the food poisoning could have been the result of bad or contaminated food or ice. However, the patients were largely ok for the present, although some need more rest. Some were sufficiently fit to go home immediately, but they would have to drink a lot of water, get more sleep and take medication. Further investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the bout of food poisoning.
