THAI authorities will burn $320 million worth of drugs next week in an annual narcotics bonfire to mark anti-drugs day.

A torch will be put to more than four tonnes of seized substances with an estimated street value of 10 billion baht on June 26, the United Nations day against drug use and trafficking.

"This is to demonstrate the determination of the Thai government to eradicate drugs from Thailand," the ministry said in a statement.

Illegal substances going up in flames this year - Thailand's 36th drugs burn - include 32 million tablets of methamphetamine, 1.1 tonnes of heroin, 7.2 kilograms (15.8 pounds) of ecstasy and 2.2 kilograms of cocaine.

Thailand's new government in April re-launched the controversial "war on drugs" championed by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

They said there would be no extra-judicial killings which rights groups say plagued a similar 2003 anti-narcotics push, but the interior minister has warned: "If anyone does not want to die, don't walk this road."

Ever since they appointed singer Amy Winehouse and supermodel Kate Moss as special foreign liaison officers with the Office of Narcotics Control... the accumulation of recorded seizures has been way down...

Thailand to burn 16 tonnes of narcotics June 26

BANGKOK, June 18 (TNA) - To mark the United Nations Anti-Drugs Day falling on 26 June every year, Thailand is set to burn more than 16 tonnes of narcotics worth over 10 Billion Baht.

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health announced it planned to set ablaze illegal drugs over 16 tonnes of drugs whose street values are up to 10 Billion Baht. The plan is in compliance with the United Nations' mandate to eradicate drug use and trafficking, which sees its culmination on June 26 annually -- the international anti-drug day.

Besides the 16 tonnes of narcotics to go under the fire, 18.2 tonnes of confiscated evidence from unsettled drug cases still awaits being wiped out.

The annual anti-drug bonfire is to demonstrate the determination of the Thai government to destroy drugs either produced in or trafficked into Thailand, said the Ministry of Public Health in a statement.

The drugs to be thrown into the bonfire include 32 million tablets of methamphetamine and 1.1 tonnes of heroin, 7.2 kilogrammes of ecstasy and 2.2 kilogrammes of cocaine.

The ministry ensured the burning of the narcotics would be environmentally friendly as they would be burnt in very high temperatures of more than 850 degrees Celsius, which very quickly dissolves the molecules of the substance being burnt.

I'm a little surprised that some phu yai hasn't snaffled the lot, sold the goodies overseas, and pocketed the proceeds.

That is how a lot of people became "phu yai" in the first place, but I would be very surprised if any of these "goodies" intended for burning were the real thing anyway. :o

That would account for the shortages of baking powder and baking soda in the supermarkets. :o
