Monastic chiefs seeking action against phony nuns and monks; hospital complains against bogus patients

Monastic chiefs are taking action against women who disguise themselves as Buddhist nuns to solicit donations during the day and work as prostitutes at night.

Police in Bangkok's Bang Sue district and monastic investigators from the Office of National Buddhism (ONB) are trying to identify these women.

The startling revelation was made in yesterday's monthly meeting of monastic chiefs and temple abbots in Bangkok. A senior nun, Dr Suphaphan na Bangchang, condemned these women as evil and called for drastic action. She said the issue would not stain the public image of around 20,000 legally ordinated Thai nuns. "These women are fake nuns and Buddhists can differentiate between them and proper nuns," she added.

The ONB is seeking cooperation from the city administration to assign street sweepers and garbage collectors to feed information about the hiding places of these women or fake monks, who also solicit donations to finance their alcohol and drug habits.

The men are farmers based mainly in Chaiyaphum province. They come to Bangkok during the off-harvest season and pass themselves off as monks to solicit money. These men had also travelled to Singapore to do the same, but were later barred from entering the country following complaints by both Thai and local Buddhists.

The meeting was also told about real monks who purposely kept their blood-sugar high so they could remain in the Priest Hospital in order to regularly receive money and gifts from devout Buddhists. "Those monks keep consuming high amounts of sugar so they can remain at the hospital for treatment," said Phra Sutham Maythee, the monastic chief of Bangkok.

The hospital, not allowed to take legal action against monks, has lodged a complaint with the ONB and the monastic disciplinary office in Bangkok.

If the nun revelation is true its probably (blows) the old saying tighter than a nuns tw.t... in more ways than one.

Ya think? So what about hapless farangs? I don't give monks or nuns anything. I can't tell the difference. Sorry, but I'm just one of those unsophisticated heathens. So if Bhuddists can tell the difference, how about getting one of those Bhuddists with a badge to do something, as the fake nuns and monks are all over the place. :o

So has anyone slept with a nun lately?

Strangely enough I did give about 20 baht to an women dressed as a nun a couple of days ago. When one the waitress saw this the nun was ushered out of the restaurant. I asked the waitress if she was a fake nun and she replied she was not sure but it would be better if I did not do it again. The nun did not offer me any other services as I presume 20 baht was not enough. BTW this was in Korat City

And just where pray tell are these naughty nuns soliciting during their nocturnal shift?

I'm sure they would increase their turnover if they combined the two ideas.

I think that the cleaner/smarter monks are the fakes the grimy ones are real. But I allow the staff to deal with them when they come in the office, very few ever get anything.
