well a bmw m3 driven slow vs a prius driven slow, the prius would win, like they say, its all down to driving style - how heavy footed you are.

Yup, as JC so rightly said, it's not necessarily WHAT you drive but HOW you drive it.

The Stig must have really hammered the Prius to get it down to 17 miles per (UK) gallon :o

At full throttle hybrid's petrol motor is busy full time, it's not in a fuel saving mode.

Hybrids ARE a way to go - no other technology saves energy otherwise wasted on braking., but don't forget that it saves fuel comparing to the original petrol engine the hybrid system is mated to, which might not be great to begin with.

Wait until they stick hybrids on modern diesels to see real economy.
