Hi Chaps,

I came to Thailand with a Non Immigrant single entry visa (that expires on the 26 August 08) with the intentions of applying for a retirement visa, unfortunately this is now not possible at the moment, so I was wondering what I now have to do in order to stay in Thailand. I'm based in Chiang Mai.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes

You will have to use other entry/visas. You can use a couple 30 day visa exempt border stamps to start with and that is only a day trip for you. Then perhaps a trip to Vientiane for a 2 entry tourist visa? When you have the funding you can then convert and obtain the retirement extension at some point.

Can extend for a year if you or your Wife have 40,000 Baht a month income. OR

Embassy in KL may issue you a Multi Entry Non O Visa based on you marriage. Take copies of your Wifes ID Card her House Registration and Marriage certificate. A bank book with some money in it will help as will a letter from your Wife asking them to issue you with a Visa.

This would give you up to 15 months but would need a hop over the border every 90 days.

You can also get a one off 60 day extension from Immigration in Chiang Mai. Reason to visit your Wife.

Chaps,

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking into it, I went and had a talk with immigration (Chiang Mai) yesterday and they say they will let me off with not having the funds in my account for 3 months (as it is my first time).

Best wishes

Nice of them. But, as it's a Catch-22 situation anyway, it's the least they could do:

You get a single entry Non Imm visa in order to come to Thailand to apply for a retirement extension. However, the money has to be in the bank for 3-months before you can apply for extension -- but since you were only stamped-in for 90 days, you can't get there from here -- as getting an extension (i.e., a 15-30 day type) on a 90-day stamp is hard to do, if not impossible (although this should be one situation that would allow it).

As pointed out, there are other options if the OP is married to a Thai. But he didn't mention that.

He is that is why I thought that the 60 days extension would give him a bit of breathing space.
