My experience flying small planes and driving in Thailand for 10 years is that there is no one best map. A large collection of maps is necessary to explore various regions. Just my experience.

Hi Wim,

Michelin puts out a road atlas of Thailand that is the most detailed road information of Thailand I've ever seen. I actually was in the map industry for three years. It's a good product. Google Michelin Maps and you should find it on their site.

Have fun on the moto-tour, sounds like it will be the trip of a lifetime.

Cheers,

HB

I use two: "Thailand Road Atlas", ISBN 974-90512-6-2 and "Thailand Highway Map", ISBN 974-7745-54-2

For Bangkok, I use "Bangkok & Vicinity AtoZ Atlas", ISBN 974-92007-7-2

I also use Google Earth :o

Try the maps from Thinknet, those are really good, and will come with a CD so you can use it on the computer as well. You probably want to buy one map for each region you visit to get really good detail, like showing each service station, etc. Good luck!

You mentioned about having a Garmin and liking to use GPS. Like many things out here there seems to be a bit of a monopoly/ control on the supply for that.

If you're the type of person who likes hooky software, PCs at cut prices, etc you can go to Panthip Plaza and get Thai/English versions of GPS with Thai/SEA maps.

If you want to do it all, and be sure you are above board, then a company called ESRI seem to be the official Garmin seller for Thailand. They do Thai maps in both English and Thai which you could probably pay them to download to your exisiting GPS demanding on memory, as well as repairs etc. They are on 22nd Floor in the Standard Chartered Building (Sathorn Thani Tower3?), behind AuBon near Chong Nonsri BTS. Be prepared to pay more than you would in UK/US given the controls over supply... :o

Spend 7,000 baht at Gadget Trend in Bangkok and they will put the best map available for Thailand on your unit.

I use a Caltex road atlas - it's a bit large for a bike but quite well detailed and has separate pages fro many cities.

If you know an area of Thailand quite well - look at that page in each of the maps you are considering and you can compare the quaility.

Is it worth getting the Michelin map (one large sheet and is a good route planner) and supplement that with more detailed color photocopied pages giving the detail you need for areas that you will be staying in. Reduces the need to refer to your master copy and gives you a back up copy to make notes on or loose.
