What is the law regarding carrying of pocket knives in Thailand (3" blade)

Thanks

I guess it depends the size of the pocket, 3" is a big pocket.

More seriously, in the middle of jungle I don't think you would have any problem with a 1' blade. In the subway, people may ask for more explanation.

I'm sure he's going to get a carry permit for a gun? Get real, most Thais cannot get such a permit. If they have got enough connections & money, maybe they can get a premise permit to keep one in the house. Anyone really know what the law is with respect to carrying knives?

not sure, but I have 2 massive guns already. A little knife wouldnt even peirce my skin.

Why dont you just carry a baseball bat, you know the ones that are about 10 inches and they can extend.

Anyone asks just say you going to play baseball

i asked a cop one time and he said it depends on what your occupation/reason for carrying it is.

So what is an occupation that lets you to carry a bland anyway? Gangster?

Whenever I travel, I like to carry a knife for general use. Here is the US, I can carry a gun and a big knife, but in Thailand......I know I'll never be able to carry a gun so I'm looking for alternatives. A small knife would be good. A big knife would be better but I'd hate to draw attention to myself. I also carry a padlock which (in a pinch) can be put in a sock for an alternate weapon (a smelly impact weapon :o )

When I go hiking or work in the garden I usually carry a knife, and often use it. In the countryside, a knife can be very useful. But I agree, in the city, it's less obvious ...

What's a 'bland'?

You always follow me picking up on my mistake.. Its getting a little creepy man..

Why on earth would you want to carry a weapon around? Gun? Knife, padlock in a goddamn sock?

What sort of person are you?

Honestly . . i despair, I really do

To most normal people I know, a pocket knife is not a weapon, but simply a handy tool to carry with you. It is surprising how often you use one, cutting some string, opening a box, etc. I have always carried one, since I was a kid, as did my grandfather.

He prided himself on it being very sharp, and how long, he could make an apple peal with it.

All people that carry one are not gangsters ! :o

I do a lot of gardening and handiwork and find many uses for my pocket knife. The main blade is great for cutting plants (with precision and accuracy, as opposed to ripping it and potentially taking more than intended ), but it also comes with a fabric cutter and a metal saw. If I had to pick: the tool I use most is the screwdriver for odds-and-ends like tightening doors and tinkering with computers. Comes in handy because I tend not to carry screwdrivers (aside from the one included with the tool) wherever I go.

This one displays the different tools on the knife:

lock-blade, fabric cutter, metal saw, phillips-head screwdriver, wire stripper, glass breaker, bottle opener, tweezers (not visible) and toothpick (removeable grey notch on the body of the tool).

Not sure why they put a toothpick in it--the idea seems a bit gross.

As far as fighting goes, this thing is pretty useless. Sure it can seem intimidating, but a big stick or a cane would be better. Also, to the OP, you should be fine as long as you don't bring it to airports (or at least put it in your check-in luggage).

As dumb as it sounds if you told a BIB that you carry a knife for protection you could be arrested. If you say that you always carry a knife in case you witness or become involved in a car wreak to cut off the seat belt you are home free. TIT

I recently bought some lethal-looking knuckle dusters and a Rambo-type combat knife at a local temple fair.

Who says Buddhism is a p#ssy religion? :o

I'm a farm boy and have carried a small pocket knife in my pocket since I was a boy. How would you peel fruit or vegetables without one? Airport security forces me to put it in my checked baggage.

I also want to know the law on this:

Whenever I travel, I like to carry a chainsaw for general use. Back in Zimbabwe, I can carry an anti-tank rocket launcher and a vial of biological warfare agent. I also carry a personal atomic weapon which (in a pinch) can be put in a sock for an alternate weapon (a smelly kill-all-including-me weapon )

Jeez - we are talking about BKK, not a warzone.

Just stick to a nice smile, no arrogance and learn some Thai - you'll be safe, I assure you.

Sorry to the OP, but if he thinks he needs to carry a knife for protection in LOS then he is clearly a complete @rse. If you carry a knife then you better be prepared to use it and if you do use it here, you will go to prison. If you dont have a knife, you are more likely to walk away from confrontational situations which is really the best option you have in a foreign country. I've wandered around downtown Luanda in Angola at night and never felt the urge to carry a knife...if I did and I pulled it out, I would probably get shot. Smile to people and be nice and also take a bit of care about the type of areas you are wandering around when drunk at night and you should never need one.

Sorry, didn't realise that. Maybe you're the only one I don't understand :o .

I realised after I posted that you meant 'blade'.

ahhhh old habits die hard.  That's what I get for living in San Francisco, where it's not always safe.  I'm a federal agent so I see the worse of people.  I've always felt safe in Bangkok, but I just like to be prepared for a bad situation.  I may never get into an altercation but it's alway better to be prepared than not.  I also do like to carry a small knife for general use.

So you are a federal agent and you like to carry knives and padlocks around with you. What are you going to do if you get into a "bad situation"? Fanny around taking off your shoe and sock and putting the padlock in it? Or do you carry a spare sock in your pocket? Was that part of your official self defence training? :o

It's all about survival and improvisation.  I guess hanging around with law enforcement and seeing the bad in people for all these years has taken a toll on me  :D I should meditate more.... :o

I was once actually stopped by Airport Security at BKK. In my haste, I'd left a telescopic truncheon & a cosh in my hand luggage, I was merely asked to deposit them in the receptacle along with the scissors, nail clippers etc. No explanation required whatsoever.

Always carry around a small penknife thingy when up-country for odd chores. Cheap Chinese one bought in Tesco that I doubt will last long. Would never get it out for personal defence though - liable to cause me more damage than anyone else!

Would like to get something a bit better made like a Leatherman or Victorinox (Swiss Army). Anyone know if they're available in BKK (not fakes)? Thanks.

Same thing happened to me on a flight from BKK to CM. Completely forgot I had a 7" Pukoh knife in my small luggage bag.

All that happened was it was transfered into a "secure" luggage section of the plane and handed back to me at the destination airport.
