Eva Airways Set To Cut Flights

EVA set to cut flights

EVA Airways, suffering losses and spiralling fuel costs, will reduce the number of flights it operates to Europe and the United States.

The cuts, to begin in September, would be flexible and determined by actual operational costs, said EVA spokesman Mr Nieh Kuo-wei.

Passengers will be notified one month in advance of the cuts to be made.

Destinations to be affected by the cuts include Amsterdam, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Auckland and Brisbane.

EVA reported a loss of NT$1.87 billion (US$61.6 million) last year. The carrier's loss for the first quarter of this year surged to NT$2.3 billion and could surpass NT$10 billion for the year. Fuel now accounts for 60 per cent of EVA's total operating costs.

Meanwhile, China Airlines (CAL) chairman, Mr Philip Wei, said in view of rising fuel costs, CAL would be adopting a new operational strategy focusing on shorthaul regional flights and charter flights to China. The carrier has begun reducing the number of longhaul flights it operates.

CAL reported a loss of NT$2.97 billion for the first quarter of 2008.

Too bad, I really like their service to LAX. No doubt the remaining flights won't be getting any cheaper.

bummer, I am flying with EVA twice in the next few months-LAX>KIX next month, then SFO>BKK in November...I've just phoned EVA and all is good right now, I just hope it continues to go smoothly for these flights!

Thats good news , the wife and I are going to SFO in Aug and returning in Sept..//Thanks for the info

Some conjecture re: reduced flight schedules here.

I'd recommend being proactive and contacting BR, or your travel agent, now if you think you might be affected. Nowadays you have to be very, very vigilant re: future ticketed itineraries, and never assume the airline will contact you, or take care of you.

EVA Air's 14 weekly Taipei - Los Angeles nonstop flight from 08SEP08 will be returning to 17 weekly from 11DEC08, in time for Christmas travel.

One of many airline service changes world-wide. Will be interesting to see how all these flight reductions will affect the in-bound long-haul tourist arrivals. Me thinks there will be/are killer hotel deals will be available in LOS during the next year :o
