Hello All,

My query is with regard to "Checked-In" Luggage and NOT Hand Luggage.

I will buy a multi-purpose Penknife/Toolknife soon and know that it's obviously

a big no-no to bring this on as Hand-Luggage!! It's something like a Multi-purpose

Swiss Army knife with utilities like pliers/wire-cutters/serrated blades/scissors/screwdriver etc..etc..

It's foldable and is stored in a small pouch with folded dimensions similar to a mobile phone.I can't see

this being a problem to be honest as I obviously can't access this knife during my flight.I just hope someone

x-ray scanning my suitcase doesn't go all "Weapons-of-Mass-Destruction" hyper on me and cause a big fuss

over what I've got!! Does anyone have any feedback on this query???

I appreciate that different airports/countries might have differing levels of sensitivity, but surely whether it be

Singapore/Suwannapoom/Heathrow or JFK........IT WON'T BE A PROBLEM,WILL IT :o:D

Here are 3 pictures of something similar to what I'm thinking of taking. Thanks all :D:D

I have a similar thing ( a bit less sophisticated than yours, though :o ) and never had problems with carrying it in my check-in luggage, not in Europe and not in Asia.

this kind of knife does not require any special permission (at least not that I knew of)

Muslim terrorists have no access to the checked bags so you are safe.

Does this mean Non-Muslim terrorists have access to all areas?

No, but the baggage handlers, both ends of your flight, have unfettered access to everything.

My Swiss army knife has many frequent flyer points in my check in baggage without incident, but due to buying to many jars of Pate ,my toilet bag ended up in my carry on bag on the PP -BKK flight last month .

It cost me my nail clippers and a bottle of shampoo. Good to see they are on the job. :o

Ah, the LEATHERMAN, a handy tool.  I have a couple of them along with the Swiss Army Tool (not the knife, altho have a couple of those, too).  NEVER a problem in the checked baggage.  I do, however, semi lock the bags with those plastic wire ties, use colored ones so I can tell if the bag's been opened enroute.  The airport checkers normally don't seem to have colored ties.

I used to have a nice many tool Swiss Army knife until one time I flew into Siem Reap, Cambodia when I accidently left it in my hand luggage. The customs as Vientiane were understanding however and said they will give it to one of the flight staff and I can collect it at Siem Reap.

However I completely forgot to collect it in the ensuing scrum at the airport. Not a happy camper when I realised! :o

I had a 12 inch machette in my 'checked in baggage' recently on a flight from UK to Thailand so you should be OK with the leatherman ;-)

Nothing sinister , needed it for the Garden and the Thai ones seem to shed the Handles too often.

I really wanted to bring home a decorative sword from my trip last year, but I assumed I'd get hammered for it even if it was in checked-in luggage?

always amuses me with all the fuss regarding airport security and knives - is this a knife? is that a knife? could it be used as a weapon on the aircraft? etc.. etc...

then once you're actually at 30,000ft and along comes your dinner, the airline themselves supply you with......(drum roll)..... a knife

with Etihad, it is almost always a metal knife too..! must admit the serrations bearly manage to get through the bread bun, but as a stabbing weapon... :o

if you had the same one on your person at the airport security search, i doubt you'd get on the aircraft (with it)

yes, but using one's metal knife from the meal service, for anything other than eating, would be strictly against in-flight dining etiquette. It's all very well to want to hijack the aeroplane, or cause some other kind of shenannigans aboard - but there are certain rules in society, and it is jolly poor play to use your metal knife from the dining tray to run amok, don't you think??

yes i do think exactly that..

unfortunately, and sorry to spoil your rose tinted view of the world, there are a growing number of others that don't..

Went through 2 scans at Lusaka 2 weeks ago. And the magnetic walk through.

Bottom of the steps to the BA plane I rooted for the choc bars I just bought. what comes out of the bag? :D:( My very large Schrade..same as Leatherman, but better (!!!).

What to do.. :D:o .. as I have a transfer at Heathrow? I called the Purser who was visibily shocked at this weapon on board his plane!!! I told him it has been with me all over the world for many years and is in effect an old friend! He thanked me profusely for offering it up and he kindly said he would give it to the Captain to keep for me. he came back in 5 minutes to say as there was a connection he could not take it.

Wow...what next? He told me that he is holding the plane...opening the hold...finding my bag and putting the Schrade in! Cool or what?? What a result and darn good of BA to do this. 5 stars lads. I guess it was because I showed a flaw in the security and offered the tool up. They were clearly flustered at this thing in my hands on the plane..... :D:D:D

Check out the 'Funny Old World' column in the latest Private Eye, which contains an article about a bloke who managed to take his chainsaw aboard a flight, as it's not listed as 'banned'.

Knife? Pah.

I've always wondered about this; what sort of checking do they do with luggage? Is it x-rayed, for example?

I believe the US airlines and TSA public statements are that they Xray every bag and have the goal to run it through some sort of explosive detection system, sniffer or whatever. When you check in at LAX in Los Angeles, you often have to run your bag through the big X ray machines before even getting to the ticket counter. I only travel with carry-on so I have not been in those lines. They are quite chaotic and just add-ons so the quewes are a real mess.

Sadly, I bought my first "leatherman" the summer of 2001, right before Sept 11. My old boy scout training suggested it was a handy thing to have. I used it many times at work and on the road for those minor things it comes quite handy for. It seemed like the great traveling tool for my carry on. Then of course 911 happened and you can't carry it on board. I almost never have checked luggage so I rarely am able to bring along what would be a great traveling aid. Life is not perfect.
