A quick look in my GF:s passport reveals an I followed by 6 digits under passport number.

The reason I picked an I is because this is the letter that was in the passport I looked in.

I have not seen any other passports, and thus I cannot claim to know what this space can be occupied by - for all I know, the "I" could be an arbitrary letter out of 26 in the alphabet, but it could also stand for something particular, like the type of passport. It could even (not likely) be a Roman numeral 1.

My wife's passport number consists of a 'W' followed by 6 digits. And we weren't married when it was issued! Therefore I don't think the letter contains a code, at least not a simple one.

mine starts with a 'J'

Issued at the end of 1998.

Wife's is a "P" and 6 digits.

The wife's is E with 6 numbers and the daughters is N with 6 numbers.

Whilst mine is E with 7 numbers...
