Cost Of Primary And Secondary Schooling

Hi folks

I have a friend (thai lady ) not girl friend who has a school age daughter .

I know she is struggling to pay her school expences .

My question is how much does it cost a parent to educate primary and secondary students in government schools.

I look forward to any advice .

Hi OP, Need a little more information to answer this one. I teach for an EP program at a Govt. school. It is important to remember that their are Govt. schools with good reputations that the student is going to pay more to attend. For example the school I teach at has students who travel 50-75 km from where they live because the school has a good reputation (and we all know the "Big face" factor in the LOS). Ss pay 35,000 baht plus fees per term to be in the English program. Ss need to pay (fees) to attend a standard Thai program too. Fees can include, books, paper, uniforms, using the schools facilities, etc. There is really no such thing as a free education at a Govt. school in the LOS. Many very poor children go to village or temple schools where they rely solely on donations.

By and large they are "free" - except for her having to buy uniforms and some books - the education and school attendence fees are in themseleves a free service. And even for those families that cannot afford the cost of some books and unfiroms, there are social welfare programmes to assist them. In rural areas where the distance form the school to home can be several km's, transport can be a cost.

School meals - I think they are mean't to be free as well (can someone confirm that?).

In short: schooling is garunteed in Thailand for all children - no exceptions. No matter what a child's parents circumstances are there are help programmes they can fall back on.

Ss and teachers pay 20 baht for their lunch and their are numerous food stalls to choose from. May I add that my mother in law is a (Govt.) civil servant and has been teaching at a village school for almost 30 years. The students receive a very good education even with limited (minimal) facilities. Village schools still fall under Govt schools, but usually are lacking in money and resources.

An ex of mine was paying 100 baht a day for chooling for her kid in a Pattaya government school.
