I live in a building with no wifi and no incoming telephone line but I do have a cable from "true" for tv. I am told this cable cannot be used for a computer connection. However, I do have satellite connection for tv which I am currently using. My question is can an internet connection be set up through the satellite.? The satellite was installed for the previous tenant of the condo and I have renewed the smart card to try out the tv service which I find rather expensive. I have searched around and can't seem to find a definite answer.

Thanks, Stan

Yes it can be but not that form of satellite.. IPStar (which is a harrible slow service) needs a whopping great big dish and different reception equipment.

Yes, I've heard. Thanks.True says they have satellite in Bangkok but not CM. Any other way to get internet in a building with no wifi, no telephone lines outgoing and no cable possibilities? I guess I will get out more often.

I would use CDMA but then I am in CDMA service area, if your in Hutches area your probably not.

Failing that I would move to a place that had good internet.

I dont know (although you mention CM),if you live there. but I have sat/internet.

The dish IS NOT a whopping great big dish, mine is the same size as a True TV dish.

I havnt found the IPStar to be slow. I pay for 56mbps and usualy get it,although this last few weeks it has been slower during the day.

If you are in CM and want more info...supplier etc give me a message

Must have changed.. When I had IPStar it needed a huge 1.8m dish.. My UBC is a 60cm (or 90??) dish.. one would drawf the other and was certainly too large to install on a balcony or condo setup.

Well, I don't really want to move as I like my location and space. What is CDMA and how do I contact them?

Thanks

CDMA refers to a sort of higher speed mobile internet using a mobile phone or modem as a dial-up service. Take a look around for Hutch CAT and EV-DO. You might consider GPRS/EDGE which is a similar GSM service offered by AIS/One-2-Call, DTAC and TrueMove.

Personally I'd look in to pulling a telephone line, provided it could be provisioned with ADSL. What do neighbors do for internet access?

Thanks , I'll check these out. I'm told there are no outgoing telephone lines available in this building, Hillside 3 off Nimmenhaymin.

I have IPStar, the dish is about the size of a UBC dish and the service is fast enough to watch two streaming vdo's at the same time, so dunno where you got your information from?

Again I would push hard to investigate the opportunity to get a fixed line pulled as this might be more cost-effective when compared to the IPStar solution. Check with neighbors, ask what they do for internet access. Try to determine a nearby 02 number, say from a local business, then do a lookup on the various DSL providers websites (True, TOT, CSLoxInfo, et al.) to see if service is offered off that exchange. In my building I was told no fixed lines quite a few times before we got four TOT lines pulled and two True lines pulled.

I have the big dish and 1600baht for 256/128 that has not worked properly in in six months, but its not an IpStar problem its ToT.  Who do you get your service from and does the small dish work without phone line for up link as mine is a xmt uplink no phone lines here.  Sorry to hi jack to post, but looking for options to resolve poor internet service from provider.

Dish must have changed.. Back when I had it they used to supply a rackmount reception box (huge with noisy fans) and during the time was when the modem sized boxes came.. Also paid up to about 15k a month with GB transfer costs too some months.

From memory it was a 1.2 or 1.8m solid dish.. Huge !!

didnt know they had managed to shrink the Rx equipment.
