While I enjoy making new friends, I have stopped trying to remember their nicknames anymore. I might remember their job title but seldom their actual names anymore. I have their job title listed in my phone so whenever the person calls, I always say : "Hello (job title)" or "Hello Teacher" as an example. :o

You?

its probably because you smoke the same thing “Hendrix” smoked .

But it is more entertaining then one of "jingthings" polls.

Yes I remember Names..

If in a businees situation, business cards are exchanged and I jot down details of where and when met on the cards when I file them. In a social situation I tend to remember the names of the main players, so to speak, but rarely remember the names of the shy quiet people that are inevitably part of the group.

Unfortunately I have difficulty with their real/full names. But I usually remember their nick names as these are usually 1 or 2 syllables max.

Same for me .... In business meetings I position the business cards in front of me to match the seating positions of the people at the table, then I write notes on the business cards immediately after the meeting to help me recall the person in future.

Outside Thailand I try to use the name after being introduced to help me remember, but I can't do that here as the name goes in one ear and striaght out the other. Nicknames for work colleagues are much easier to remember though.

I do not try to remember the second part of any names .... just use khun (first name) for everyone.

Ah Teacup, that is your name, I don't remember (James' attempt to keep this post on topic), it seems my poems didn't go over with a certain M.O.D. and I got suspended for 3 days. :D

I am suprised Mr Rak remembers your name (James' 2nd attempt to keep this post on topic).

The Thai names are no harder or easier than any other names for me...but I am not real good at remembering names when introduced. I usually try to use that memory trick of immediately using their name in the introduction response...you know, make eye contact, say, "Somchai, very nice to meet you", that seems to help some.

I usually have to meet someone twice before the name is fixed in RAM.

like Ulysses, I am bad at remembering names or anything else I have only heard once. Nicknames will do fine, but I find it difficult to remember Pongtaewachitawongse Pamasuchatagonareadik. I would get a class roll transliterated to English and find myself incapable of anything more difficult than Krit Kedang. The good students like Sathit and Ponyarin and Jitsuda and Kao-Fang were not so bad. I learned my partner's names when we first met, but then he changed them both, so I never learned them. Even his sisters, whom I see frequently, have similar nicknames like Bee, Boo, Baa, and Bow.

I never remember the names but what i have done is make up my own.

Like my partners friend who can't open the gate because he's too weak, his name is Mr. Power now.

Another friend is an alcoholic, his name is Mr. Maw

Another friend is tiny, his name is Mr. Nitnoy

Another friend never talks, his name is Mr. My Poot

There are lots of others and they seem to love this idea, so much so, that when I am introduced to a new person, they start betting on what I am going to call him. I'm not too sure what they call me mind but at least I can remember each of them individually this way!!

Yeah I have a hard time here remembering foreigner's names, same way they cant pronounce my name that end with "porn" so i said its ok, juz call me miss Porn !! :o

I tend to remember people with names like "Terdsak"; "Krit-Arit" (say it fast), and "Tittiporn" for some reason. :o

Yes those are the easy ones. I have even seen Terdsak spelled with a "U" on a Gulf Air workers' desk. I had to take some deep breaths before I could state my business.

In my office I work with Pom (F) Pond (M) Pong (M) Aom (F) and Gay (F), whilst my Thai is pretty good, I still get mixed up between the first three all the time

....and then there's Thawat..... I have to remember the 'ha' and that it's two syllables :o

It seriously takes me like 3 or 4 times to remember anyones name, but then i'll remember their name and face forever. (For this reason i had to check "No")

I think Thai names are not any more difficult to remember than English names, as Thai nick names are often just 1 syllable anyway. Unless we are talking about remembering full Thai names, but since when do Thais introduce themselves using their full name.

Usually I remember their first name not the whole full name. It's difficult to spell Thai full name too, involve so many letters.

I remember when first meeting my wife's sister and niece, when introduced I asked for an English translation of their names, I was told "Crab and Vegetable", so I decided to stick with their Thai names.

My wife's brother's name is Cum Sing, his wife is Cum Song and son is Cum Sung - so I remember them OK.

My wife's Thai name is Thongliang - the same as her sister, just for simplicity!
