Drug Abuse, Prostitution Still Thailands Woes

I have lived on 3 continents

traveled to 16 or 17 countries, lost track

lived in 3-4 large to world class great cities

and several smaller cities.

I think I have visited two dozen MAJOR cities.

And made a point of exploring them with and without guides.

There is NO PLACE on the planet that I have seen

that had as wide open, in your face, and HUGE like a

900lb gorilla in the corner, sex business as exist JUST in Bangkok.

I have also seen a dozen + cities in Thailand.

There are two levels of this in Thailand.

That more discrete, but clearly LARGER Thai on Thai industry

And the blatantly direct marketed 'here's where you go' visiter's industry.

The former dewarfs the later.

The HUGE places on big roads, among others, have big group rooms

and several bedrooms off it. For that up scale Thai male / male bonding experience

with girls between rounds of Sangsom. This is all over BKK and in smaller

kariokes in the country, rarely is EVER a farang to be found. If so, just one

and he's there bonding for business reasons, and feeling really out of place,

no doubt. But that's the way it's done.

Like communal baths in Japan, followed be enough sake to sink the Bismark.

One need only be riding in a taxis and look in on any given evening and

see the types and numbers of clientel.

What is more obvious externally is the write homes about the farang direct sales.

Prostitution is so prevalent across the country, why not make MORE money

selling to the imported punters. It's just another market with special needs,

and a good markup. But isn't the bread and butter business.

It IS a good place for those with blinkers on, to lay blame and deflect face loss.

Why should Farang pay a premium. Thai girls are all all over Farang. Wanting Farang to marry them so that they can escape from Thailand. In fact, Farang should start charging Thai girls for sex, marriage and passport (in that sequence). :D:D:D

And remember a great many of the western media's "sex industry" stories are from lazy journos who churn out the same moralistic drivel before they head off for a short time.

Agree 100%. Sex sells newspapers and magazines and there's no shortage of second rate reporters who are too lazy to cover the real news coming out of Thailand but jump at the chance to go "undercover" and write the same story on the sex industry again and again, year after year.

This put down argument assumes that all frahangs are the same..

WRONG.

The put down farangs will be even harder on the go

and make use of the exisiting system farangs.

Never considering any side but their moralist dogma.

Hey preacher,

grandma and the baby need to EAT and the roof needs fixing.

I'm getting the job done, and will make merit for the next life on monday.

Back to work for a bit. It's the easier choice.

Blame the system a bit more than those making use of it.

It exists period. If EVERY farang dropped doing it,

the Thai sex industry would hardly notice it.

Persecuting people who use drugs and shutting down places where they socialize is likely to lead to more untreated overdoses and fatalities, not less. Targeting the Comfort Zone will have little positive impact on drug-related harm.

The overwhelming majority of prostitution in Thailand is by-Thai-for-Thai. The Patpong/Cowboy/Ratchada stuff is a very glitzy minority. That's a fact, and no, the locals don't like to admit it. Strict monogamy is a relatively recent ivory tower cultural 'innovation' that the masses never asked for or wanted.

Sorry, don't quite agree with you fully.

Ask anyone what do you think of when one mention Thailand:

Farang: Sex industry (as explained by treads above)

Thai: The Royal Institution

Hence the problem is mostly casued by Farang, and not Thai. Not sure if this is a conclusive observation. Constructive critism accepted.

The Thai have never had a problem with the sex industry. Unlike the West that has tried to fight prostitution unsuccessfully and hypocritically, they accept it with realism. Their problem is the issue the West makes of their tourist-targeted sex industry, and that has become an embarrassment for them, not their own view of the industry.

They are not being hypocritical about their tourist vs local industry. They have no problem with either, they are simply reacting to western perceptions.

So it is quite possible that the Thai may somewhere in future try to kill the tourist-targeted industry, leaving their own untouched. This is not hypocrisy, it is forced upon them.

It is the West that has a problem coming to terms with the reality that prostitution is here to stay, and does in fact have a vital role to play in propping up that unnatural mind-fart, monogamy.

Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket are synonymous with the sex trade. Mention any of these cities or Thailand to anyone from a developed country and the first thing that comes to mind is the pervasive sex industry. Live with it. There is no changing it especially with the government and economy is in a downward spiral. Two people complained to me this week about the sex workers behaving aggressively on lower Sukhumvit at 9:00 AM. Prices are tumbling and the workers are getting desperate. For the farang tourists only a few of the most well run establishments are busy and no high-season is expected this year. I cannot speak to the Thai edifices of pleasure on Ratchadephisek but I suspect business is down there too. It is also been reported that the girls have been abandoning the tourist areas, at least for a while, and returning to the provinces due to lack of customers.

Anyway you look at it Thailand is a developing country. You can consider it "Burma with Electricity". There are many factors that draw young men and girls to the industry. Some do it out of obligation to the family and some do it to get a proper mobile telephone and every reason in between. It is never going away here in this "banana democracy". In fact for the past eight years I've been here the industry has added even more workers to the mix. Let's see, Bt6,000 to Bt10,000 a month working a normal job or Bt30,000 to Bt150,000 per month working in Thailand most famous industry? Some have no choice but many do.

World's oldest profession.

Pretty much sums it up.

2-4 wives is not unheard of in a lot of the non-cghristian world.

If you can afford them it's up to you. But the hand wringing and

name calling certain western, read christian, groups has made the

Thai's feel a lose of face. Lost face means more than rampant prostitution to them.

If they shut down the Farang targeted P sites, the ones who want it will just diffuse into

the existing wider network and go on as usual. It will change nothing,

because the system AIN'T going outa business in our lifetimes.

The nature of men is sow seeds over a wider area to propagate your genetics widely.

If your genetics is strong, you suport the species. The nature of women is to nurture the

young till they can fend for themselves. This naturally calls for a extended family structure

to support this care giving, division of labor so to speak. But if this division is split,

it is HARDER on the children and mother.

This natural dichotomy between the genders roles has lead directly to prostitution.

The women use it to survive after being dumped with a child,

and the men are actually now targeted BY the women for financial support globally

rather than individually.

Church sanctioned marriage, one on one, is one way of this support, with a moralist gild edge,

and making use of man's natural proclivities for seed diffusion is the alternate method of deriving support.

Both support the same end in most cases.

Ain't it a weird world?
