Proof Of Onward Travel

Featured Replies

Daughter from US is here on a tourist visa. She has to do a border run. Does she need proof of onward travel?

Thanks in advance

I presume she is reaching her 90th day in the Kingdom? If she is only approaching the 60th day, then she can go to the local immigration office to extend the visa by an extra 30 days (cost is 1900 Baht).

I've left the country only once to do a border run (to Vientienne, Laos) and I was not asked anything when the Thai consulate issued me a new tourist visa. If your daughter has plans to exit the country someday, I guess it wouldn't hurt to take along a copy of her flight itinerary.

Hi

I agree with Gumballl, I was doing Cambo border runs last year and did not need proof of onward travel

This is incorrect and incomplete information. I can tell you for a fact that if you do a border run to Ban Laem (right now and most of last year) you will be asked to show proof of onward travel if you are expecting to get a 30 day visa-exempt entry. At this particular post you can purchase a 200 baht "transportation coupon" to help you out. Other posts have differenent requirements.

If you are doing a border run to activate a second or third 60 day entry on a tourist visa you will not be asked for proof of onward travel. If you are doing an entry on any visa at all, you won't be asked to show proof of onward travel.

Thanks Tropo,

I spoke with friends in Immigration and they will take care of it when she goes there. They also mentioned that there are

'papers' for sale i.e. fake travel doc's for sale. I did not want her to be stuck in Cambodia trying to sort that out.

I appreciate your response.

I'm not sure about other border posts, but at Ban Laem the very reason they started selling these bogus transportation coupons (I'm calling them bogus simply because they cannot be used for travel) is because too many people were using bogus onward travel documents or edited e-tickets when they first introducted the requirement sometime around the middle of last year. They must have discovered that the visa run companies were issuing their customers with fake bookings on air tickets.

If a person insists on using an onward ticket, I would recommend that they make sure it is a genuine ticket. They ask for a copy to keep and you never know if they will check. If they did check and found out it was bogus it could become a big problem for that person.

Personally I'm quite happy to pay 200 baht for the bogus ticket.
