Don't Always Trust Your Doctor

Don’t always trust the doctor. Just recently I had a minor motorcycle accident. I had extreme road rash and after five days when it seemed to be slightly infected I went to see the Doctor at the private hospital in Kalasin. He had the nurse clean up my wounds and he said because I was a Farang he wanted me to stay in the hospital for one or two nights to give me an anti biotic through I. V. I did not have the desire or time to stay in the hospital and I have had many infections before in Thailand and only one time did I have to stay in the hospital and then only after a couple of courses of oral antibiotics were tried. This particular infection I knew was not that bad. I asked the doctor if he could give me oral antibiotics. He gave me a pill to take every 4 hours and a shot which he injected directly into my vain and told me to come back the next morning for another shot. I did this and he wanted me to come back 6 hours later for another one. I was going to be in another town 6 hours later, so he wrote down the shot he was giving me and later that day I went to the local hospital in Kuchinarai and asked for the shot. The doctor there examined my wound and said that in here opinion my infection could be treated perfectly fine with the oral antibiotic I had and that the shot was a miss use of antibiotics. I felt this all along and now that I had confirmation from another doctor I followed her advice and did not get any more shots. I feel the first doctor was over prescribing antibiotics and perhaps wanted me to stay in his private hospital to get extra money from me. His first bill was ฿1,500 where most other clinics I have gone to the bill would have been around ฿500. So if you are not sure the treatment is right, get a second opinion. Issangeorge

Unfortunately the NE hospital mentioned has a bad reputation among health professionals in Isaan (can't say anymore). Private does not always equal best in the smaller urban centres.

I have had good service at the Kuchinarai Public Hospital and have a fair amount of trust with them. My wife had a cyst removed from her ovary and everything went fine and was done professionally. Issangeorge
