Dvd-9, Hd-dvd And Blu-ray

Hi all experts out there,

I have a very SILLY question.

What are the differences between DVD-9, HD-DVD and Blu-ray?

I started wondering about this since I bought so called blu-ray movies from a local video shop in Chiangmai.

The shop asked me for 600 baht for a disc, but after long haggling he ended up charging me 350 insted , which was a good deal.

I played the disc and found no superiority in image quality or sound-compare to DVD-9 which can be purchased around 150-200 baht ( I have a HD ready plasma tv and a full hd lcd tv and two hd-upscaling dvd players)

Am I missing something?

Would anyone care for explanation?

The question is whether your DVD player is capable of delivering 720p and/or 1080i. The difference between DVD9 and 720p should be large. DVD9 is a dual layer DVD that can hold 8.5 GB instead of 4.7 GB.

HD-DVD is no longer used, having lost the HD format war to Blu-Ray. It, co-incidentally used a blue ray laser to read the disks. Storage space is 15 GB (30 GB dual layer).

Blu-Ray is the HD disk that won the format war. Storage space is 25 GB (50 GB dual layer). Maximum resolution of 1920x1080. Laser wavelenght is 405 nm. Larger storage space allows a higher bit rate, 36 Mbit/s to 54 Mbit/sec (48 Mbit/s for A/V) resulting in a much nicer picture.

Are you sure that it wasn't a copy? If it was, the bit rate could have been serious degraded. Also, what are you using to connect your Blu-Ray player to your HD ready tv? And when it says 'hd ready' is that 720p or 1080p? I've been very impressed with the improvement over dvd that Blu-Ray offers....

Am I missing something?

Are you sure that it wasn't a copy?I guess they are copied ones. If it was, the bit rate could have been serious degraded. Also, what are you using to connect your Blu-Ray player to your HD ready tv?I don't have a blu-ray player,but I have 1080p upscaling capable dvd player and hooked up with hdmi cable. And when it says 'hd ready' is that 720p or 1080p?The plasma is 1080i and the lcd is full 1080p. I've been very impressed with the improvement over dvd that Blu-Ray offers....

I've just checked the size of those supposed-to-be-blu-ray discs and they turned out to be 8.5GB.

Is it possible blu-ray disc to be in this small size, I'm very puzzeled?

The label says they are blu-ray discs.

I have two dvd plyers and they are capable of upscaling regular dvd to either 720p or 1080p.

If it's only reading as 8.5 most likely it's a dual layer dvd. Not saying the disk couldn't have been copied from a Blu-Ray disk though.....

If you found the size, you should be able to determine the disk type also.
