Definitely there will be repercussions due to his arrest.

PAD will re-intensify their campaign.

Chamlong has many friends that are senior within the military and charging him with treason will ignite tempers. He's viewed as a patriot and a devout Buddhist (depite being a military man) and is well respected by many.

A bad tactical move by the PPP to allow this to happen.

"A bad tactical move, by the PPP," you say? It's not about the PPP. It's about the decision to issue arrest warrants by the courts of this land. And said courts are not controlled by the PPP. [if anything.................. but that's another matter for debate.] Chamlong is charged with treason, which carries a maximum penulty of execution; in fact, it's a question of summary execution in most other countries. And as far as Buddhism goes, Khun Chamlong's sect has how many members vis-a-vis the total population of this country?

No it was Samak (a soon in jail criminal and murder) who started with the silly treason charge and not the courts. The courts just need to follow it up.

I think it was a bad move by whoever is in charge of the police who arrested him.

Just as Chavalit was starting some sort of negotiations with the P.A.D., aimed at a solution to this ongoing problem, one of the key figures is "arrested". One wonders if the left hand of the P.P.P. knows what the right hand is doing!

After all, he wasn't exactly carried away screaming that his handcuffs were too tight, was he?

After being allowed to vote he was seen smiling for the media, waving at supporters and being assisted into the front seat of a police truck by a high ranking officer.

It was a staged arrest, choreographed for maximum media exposure.

Speaking of arrest warrants, I believe they were also issued for a fugitive criminal and his criminal wife now living in luxurious exile in the U.K.

At least Chamlong had the courage of his own convictions and didn't flee to a foreign country.

I agree, the courts are not controlled by the P.P.P. and he may be charged with treason, but I somehow doubt he will languish in prison for too long.

"The show must go on" :o

"The show must go on"

Certainly more entertaining than the so called mindless comedy or the hopeless and endlessly screened soapies shown on Thai TV . You couldn't write scripts as interesting as what passes for politics in this country.

Am I the only one in thinking that this could have been decided upon at a meeting between 2 very high profile figures less than a week ago (can't remember what the date was)?

If this is the case it looks more like an exit strategy for Chamlong and would back up opinions I have heard that the PAD leadership had split into factions.

I agree : the whole operation looks strange. Maybe an exit strategy to save face indeed.

Look at some pictures of Chamlong's "arrest"... He doesn't look like someone under stress...

Why nonsense?

As I perceive the event, police said they had to follow orders and this is quite right, how could they let Chamlong vote and walk away all in Public - NO WAY!

The Police force was forced to - as the media reports Chamlong did himself in - He doesn't need to hide in London somewhere!

Let's not miss judge the tactics!

Now some people are forced to make a move - there is a highly prominent fugitive on the run out there, with 5 issued arrest warrants, still holding a diplomatic passport! :o

Besides Somchai just had an audience with Prem and Prem was all smiles after all, wasn't he?

Somchai has massive problems, his daughter and wife, so has the PPP!

It will be a very interesting scenario to watch how clue, by clue slowly unfolds...

Interesting that chevykantese's original post on this subject was stopped for being too speculative ??

The question is, who is behind these arrests and who has the most to gain . The Govournment, the courts , the police or ' the hidden hand ' . The PAD demonstrations have been orchestrated by someone with a view to bringing down the govournment. This has not happened . The only result has been a re shuffle which leaves the PPP still in the driving seat without the odious Samak behind the wheel. That someone must be disappointed. Now , the govournment and the PAD are in negotiations to seek a compromise ,the same someone must be feeling that things are slipping away, especially with the PAD being apparently stalemated and unsure what to do next. These arrests seem to be a calculated way of stoking up a fire that was beginning to burn down. A negotiated settlement is clearly not on someones agenda. . So who is that someone ?

Doesn't exactly have the same expression of fear as O.J. Simpson does he?

Not hardly the same.

He looks relaxed, he isn't even handcuffed in the front seat.

He now gets a bully pulpit for anything he says, and it will go on the record

not just into the press and on the airwaves. The lawyers will do their thing,

he will play the contented martyr for a spell.

He will get lots of meditation time and come out

looking as refreshed as when he went in.

Absolutely disgusting that such a criminal was allowed to vote first before hauled off to prison!

I am sorry, did I miss where he was convicted of a crime and stripped of his right to vote? Are you not one that is making assertions that it is Democracy that is all important and not good government? If so how can you say you are in favor of Democracy yet approve of disenfranchising a voter with no grounds?

Chamlong's got the guns, Money, and right-wing ultra-nationalist Thai-Chinese PAD behind him and is undoubtedly being well taken care of at the moment. No need to shed tears for the man...

"Thai-Chinese PAD"? --- am I missing something? Wasn't it Thaksin that is Thai Chinese? Perhaps you mean urban, educated Thais

The PAD is neither for democracy nor good government; the PAD right-wing ultra-nationalist elitists are for themselves, it's fairly simple, really.

This is obfuscation, it does not address the question posed to you.

Just forget about it.....You won't get any real answer from sunrise07. Many others tried to get some answers from him and failed. Most people just ignore him and let him post his nonsense.

Well, it is an interesting moral and legal question. Should a man charged with treason, a charge carrying a death sentence, be allowed to vote in an election while a group he supports illegally occupies Government House? That is a question for the Thai courts to decide.

When I look at the MP's of first TRT and then PPP I seem to see MANY members that are of Thai Chinese descent present. Again your hyperbole and drama is just an attempt to muddy the issues involved using emotionally charged words instead of rational discussion. If YOU are pro-Democracy how can you support disenfranchising voters without legal reasons?

Thaksin is Chinese, Samak is, Somchai is, have a look at PPP, many have chinese descent.

Chamlong, Sondhi as well.

There is no Chinese against Thais Nationalism. There is just the educated middle class against a corrupt illegal government. Meanwhile also joined by many other groups of the society, like most of the southern people, labor unions, academics farmers, etc etc.. Sure you'll also find there right wing, left wing, nationalists, monarchist, beside PPP fans you'll find almost everything there.

No, it isn't, the vote is a right until it is lost for legal issues. To be lost it must be decided in court FIRST, yet you would strip someone of their democratic rights in the name of Democracy. Obviously you do not care about Democracy, you just care about your personal agenda.

How can Samak vote, even there are so many charges against him?

How can Thaksin has a diplomatic passport?

And don't forget that the treason charges were made from Samak who wasn't qualified to be premier and who seems to be soon in jail for many other things at court.

Well, if Samak was the only one who made charges against Chamlong, then I agree with you that he should not have been arrested and he should be set free.

A bad tactical move by the PPP to allow this to happen.

And he is the hero of 1992.....

I know he is certainly considered devout, but as he belongs to a splinter group of Buddhists that split off from (or were forced to split from, depending on who you listen to) the Thai Sangha; I would think it was his personal beliefs and matching his actions to his words that people respect.

2 down 7 to go :D:D:D

Wishful thinking on your part and a complete lack of understanding - PAD is now like Lernaean Hydra - :o

battle finished in three days

i guess we get now more "action" of what the procult onlooker mob called party.

most profit of the arrest comes for the PAD cult and nobody else. it's not a PPP tactic. samak ignored the PAD mob right from the beginning. a clever don't feed the troll strategy. why talk with a bunch of irrationale haters.

why talk with your old backward minded puppet master once you got emancipated.

anyway, now General Pallop Pinmanee enters the scene official.

from TOC:

Former Advisor to ISOC Replaces Chamlong as PAD Security Strategist

UPDATE : 5 October 2008

Former advisor to the Internal Security Operations Command Pallop Pinmanee has announced he'll replace PAD leader as the group's security strategist.

General Pallop has made it clear that unlike Chamlong, he's more of a warrior and unlikely to only adopt defensive strategy.

http://www.thailandoutlook.tv/toc/ViewData...?DataID=1009785

not much information about this young turk and oldclass mate of Chamlong is given here by TOC, the zentralorgan of the PAD politbuero.

but the second paragraph reminds me on his short appereance on the PAD mob stage one month ago. remember?

in The Nation we could read:

"Chamlong told his supporters that they should not worry about him if he were to be arrested, as General Pallop Pinmanee, his long-time friend with extensive combat experience, would replace him as leader of the PAD.

Pallop has stepped up to take the challenge. He said while Chamlong is a good defence strategist, he himself is more of a warrior. If he were to lead PAD, the battle would be finished in three days, whatever that means."

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008/08/29...on_30081793.php

nothing to worry for the PAD mob if he got arrested says Chamlong.

nothing to worry? must be lot of ill information and delusion if you are not worried if the violent street mob now gets lead by brave man like General Pallop Pinmanee.

at least Pallop is honest about his past and open admit what he is up to.

the International Herald Tribune published last year a good read about him.

Pallop, a retired general who turned 71 on Friday, speaks about his days as an army-appointed assassin in a casual, matter-of-fact tone and offers little to dispel his tough-guy reputation. He was the leader of what he called the "killer team," a secret seven-man unit of the army in 1970 that carried out extrajudicial killings. "The assignment was to kill the leaders of communist groups all over Thailand," Pallop said.

read all here: http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/05/25/asia/thai.php

unlikely like a PPP order to arrest Chamlong, but well planed by the other side to stir up some shit like the young turks doing it since the 70s in thai politics. Pallop makes it now offical.

that all sounds no good. PAD apologist "thinking" it's a party?

IMO it's a clear case of good cop / bad cop game.

It's over for the PAD. Now do they chose an exit through negotiation with the "nice" Chavalit, maybe with some form of amnesty as sweetener, or do they prefer to face police arrest and all the nasty things that may follow?

Pierrot,

Huh?

Where are you getting these ideas and opinions?

Why is it over for the PAD?

What makes you think Prem 'sanctioned' any deal?

What makes you think the current government is here to stay?

Though it does appear that the army did not follow Samak's orders, what makes you think the police are not doing as the current government asks?

etc etc etc

I can see several reasons for the most recent events and I have NO CLUE as to the validity of any of those thoughts.

1) This works to PAD's benefit to escalate things because since Samak's demise on the political scene things had stagnated.

2) The PPP thought that removing the bosses of the PAD from daily contact with the crowds that they would dissipate (truly silly thinking)
