I feel sorry for the people that got injured.

However I also believe that the PAD protests have to end sometime (sooner rather then later), as they are clearly doing a lot of damage to Thailand, and they are quite clearly breaking the law.

They have been rallying at Government house for a long time now, forcing the new PM to retreat to Don Muaeng, they have been blocking airports, and now parliament. Meanwhile talks between the new government and the PAD were underway, maybe being disturbed by the recent arrest of two of the main PAD leaders, whose arrest is within the law.

I just hope it doesn't get any worse, but that might be wishfull thinking.

I am currently in Singapore and having a hel_l of a time with keeping my Thai wife in the USA.. she was in the middle of the fighting back in 92 when a lot of students got killed protesting....now she want to return to Bangkok to fight for her country....

The PPP will be disbanded at by the courts at the next scheduled hearing...They know it...hence the rush to get the constitution changed to protect themselves and protect Thaskin......

While you say the arrest was within the law.....it was a Martial Law proclamed by a convicted criminal (Samak) who is now going to jail, and it is likely the entire case will be thrown out at the 1st hearing.

Until we can drag a bunch of these thugs back into the Thai jails and have a system where the rich MUST obey the laws of the country, Thailand will never progress.

At present the courts have at long last started to act.

I for one hope the entire current corrupt government falls apart. I applaude the percerviernce of the PAD. They are not running to take over the country but to change it.

Very bad post.

You can stay in Singapore.

One day some Thai people might wake up and realise that they are merely pawns in the games of those in power. Anybody who has lived here for any length of time will know that the outcomes are defined behind closed doors and not on the streets. The happenings on the streets are merely construed to give the plot a certain amount of public legitimacy and a smokescreen for those hiding behind. The situation will improve when Thais are better educated and have better earning power. When their lives are not so cheap they will be out of the grasp of the schemers and manipulators behind closed doors.

When Thais one day wake up and look at their political situation in relation to the rest of the world they might realise that the upper elite should receive the payback involved in fighting their own battles; they are not worth the allegiance they demand.

Unhappily for some in power there are many Thais who already know that the battles aren't worth their participation but happily for them there are still enough uneducated ones to give them a sizeable mob who are disposable.

There are other scenarios on the hypotheses above. One being that the Chamlong/Panlop withdrawal is more than just a coincidence. If these 2 and more are responsible for pressing fast forward you can then interpret the situation as you like.

But to suggest it is as simple as a messy police enforcement of the law, which just happens to have come after some very high level meetings (many of which aren't publicized), is totally naive.

That's why its called SPECULATING (as in speculate - to wonder, think, hypothesize, contemplate, consider, conjecture)...

And speculate without a shred of proof is the only thing some can do, and others proclaim there should be equal respect to all views... :o

The PAD will "change" the country of Thailand like McCain-Palin will "change" the USA. Thankfully, McPalin will fail to win in the US and hopefully the PAD won't bring in their tanks in Thailand.

Maybe you should compare PAD with Obama or maybe with Carther.....

Occupyng the houses of government for four months, and now holding the parliament members as hostages looks pretty much like a takeover to me! Or did I miss something? :o

Come back to Thailand and make that happen.

Let me share my thought here.

I think the Thai political system is simply a crap, not working in anyways we want it to be. How many times this event has to repeat again and again? Don't we get it? It is not working. I have seen/experienced these events since I was a kid and they are all the same. Thais killing Thais doesn't matter whose side you're on. You are just a pawn in a chess game. I am, by no means, a master of politics, but I think the only way to eliminate this problem is to flush those greedy politicians out of the system. We need a new system that let us be the master of the game, not a pawn.

Khunying Pornthip assures that lost leg was not caused by tear gas

Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, a respected forensic scientist, has affirmed the loss of a leg during this morning's police clash with protesters was not the result of tear gas usage.

Director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science Khunying Pornthip stated that many injuries were sustained during this morning's clash between police and People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters at the Parliament building, including one case that required the amputation of a leg.

Khunying Pornthip, however, remarked that she has not been able to examine the incident as it is still in the hands of police but assured that from her observations of the news photos, the lost leg could not have been the result of tear gas usage. She stated that the injury could have only been sustained from a much more powerful explosive.

The CIFS Director stated that she will have to wait until the situation has calmed to decide whether or not to return a request from the PAD to investigate the incident.

She stated however that she is confident forensic medical workers assigned to the event will be able to sufficiently deal with the case.

Khunying Pornthip said that she would have to receive approval from the Ministry of Justice before taking part in the investigation.

The CIFS Director said that detailed photograph evidence should be collected for the time being if she is to review the matter later. She also commented that such police dispersal tactics do not usually result in injuries of this magnitude.

Pipob Suspects PM and Deputy National Police Chief Conspire to Crackdown on PAD

UPDATE : 7 October 2008

People's Alliance for Democracy leader Pipob Thongchai revealed that Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and Deputy Police Commissioner Police General Jongrak Juthanon have conspired to crackdown on the PAD rally. Pipob insisted the PAD’s surrounding of Parliament is a peaceful and democratic means for the PAD to exercise their democratic rights.

Pipob Thongchai, a key PAD leader, took the PAD stage at Government House last night. He explained that the leaders have decided to march to Parliament to stop the illegitimate government from using Parliament to declare its policy statement.

He stated that the Election Commission has already ruled that the People Power Party is guilty of election fraud. Consequently, the PPP-led government has no rights to use Parliament to declare its policies. The delivery of its policy statement marks the official start of the government’s role in administering the country and allow the adminsitration to implement its planned policies.

Included in the policy statement is the government’s plan to amend Article 291 of the charter to pave the way for the setting up of a constitution drafting assembly. The CDA is expected to act as an independent committee in charge of overseeing the amendment of the 2007 Constitution.

PAD leader Pipob claimed that Deputy Police Commissioner Police General Jongrak Juthanon has conspired with the premier to launch a crackdown on the PAD rally. He added that the plan was adamantly protested by the Army commander-in-chief.

In response to the news that former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife, Khunying Pojaman, is seeking political asylum in the U.K., Pipob believes that the former premier will attempt to incite chaos in a bid to convince the British government to grant his request for a political refuge. He added that Thaksin would have a difficult time justifying to the British authorities how unsafe Thailand could be for him when his brother-in-law Somchai is the current premier.

The PAD leader concluded by saying the PAD will not stand by and allow the proxy government to exploit the country any further. He claimed the PAD will do what it can to help prevent the illegitimate government from amending the Constitution to get rid of the Privy Council and compromise independent organizations.

Hi all.

All this mayhem on the streets is 100% down to Somchai and probablyWomper, all in the interest of getting what they want for Kuhn Thaksin, Well on the news this lunchtime PAD were quoted saying that a lot of supporters were traveling to Bangkok, Somchai would be well advised on his next move , amongst the travelers could well be an assasin or 2, many in the South carry a greviance against all the Thaksin family. It would not surprise me.

phupaman.

And we are expect to see a government give crowd led by persons with arrest warrents, a minority of the population, totally dictate the future of government! Give us a break!

Sorry mate, but the government issued the arrest warrAnts, the government is a coalition therefore the PPP represents a minority of the population etc ....

and the answer is YES ... when government is corrupt then people must stand up to it.

The arrest warrents are requested by the Police but issued by the "Civil Court" the judiciary, not exactly a group of guys under the influence of politicians right now!

"Earlier the Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against nine core leaders of the PAD on police charges of having committed an act of high treason against the state. " quote Thanong Nation Staff member Friday , August 29 , 2008

Bangkok senator: PM lacks righteousness

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok senator Rosana Tositrakul accused Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat for allowing the riot to break out in front of the parliament on Tuesday morning.

She criticised the premier of lacking righteousness after the police were ordered to fire tear gas at public members who joined the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD)’s anti-government demonstration in front of the parliament earlier Tuesday. She said the reconciliation policy of Mr Somchai is only a policy on paper.

The unrest event near the parliament would put the country in a crisis, she added.

During the joint session of parliament, Ms Rosana interrupted Prime Minister Somchai’s announcement of government policy and protested raucously. She accused the government for announcing biased policy, as there were people injured outside the parliament.

House Speaker Chai Chidchob then closed the microphone of Ms Rosana, who continued to shout angrily. He later asked her to leave the meeting.

PM flees out of Parliament

He left the assembly hall through the Building 3 and climbed down the stairs to the ground floor. He then climbed over the fence to the Vimarnmek Mansion.

Perhaps it is indeed fortunate that his wife, Yaowapa, is a banned MP and thus missed out on being in Parliament today... I somehow can't imagine her doing that...

Part 2 of the story from the Nation:

Some 10 PPP MPs stopped from climbing to Vimarnmek Mansion

Some 10 People Power Party MPs were not allowed to climb over the fence into the compound of the Vimarnmek Mansion.

The MPs went to the fence after hearing that the prime minister had fled out of Parliament through that way. But officials inside the mansion did not allow them to climb over the fence.

The prime minister had to flee through the Vimarnmek Mansion after the People's Alliance for Democracy stayed the blockade of Parliament again.

Well, as I have stated before, I have doubts about the PAD motives, and I don't believe they do it for the good of the country. Having said that, neither do I trust or support the current government, which of course is not only the PPP, it consist of more political parties.

The arrest warrents were issued well before Samak declared the state of emergency, and I don't think his current troubles make the warrent any less valid. Going along the line your are taking, you could also argue that the current constitution is invalid, as it replaces a constitution that was abolished by a militairy coup, and you could also argue that re-instating the 1997 constitution isn't a bad thing to do.

Cabinet members and lawmakers trapped inside Parliament

Anti-government protesters have locked the gate of Parliament trapping the prime minister, his Cabinet members and lawmakers.

Parliamentary officials are trying to coordinate with authorities in charge of Ananta Samakhom Palace to open a side gate to let lawmakers out. But authorities said they are politically neutral and do not want to get involved in the rifts.

The talks to use the side gate are still inconclusive after an hour.

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has an appointment at 2.00 pm.

Police fire more tear gas on demonstrators

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat presented his government's policy statement at a sparsely-attended Parliament Tuesday as police lobbed fresh rounds of tear gas Tuesday at anti-government demonstrators gathered at Bangkok's Royal Plaza, after tear gas was earlier used to disperse thousands of protesters at the nearby Parliament.

There was no immediate report of casualties, but as clouds of tear gas drafted by the equestrian statue of the

revered monarch King Rama V, scenes of discord and disorder witnessed the loss of the traditional harmony

of the setting.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Chai Chidchob adjourned the parliamentary session after the premier delivered his policy statement to Parliament which 164 opposition Democrat MPs and 40 senators boycotted.

Some PAD protesters reportedly locked the gate at the only entrance to the House, temporarily delaying the legislators' departure.

Pol. Maj-Gen. Amnuay Nimmano, Metropolitan police chief, said the police had to use tear gas to control the situation, but affirmed that the police only used tear gas without rubber bullets or broken glass.

Meanwhile, Democrat Party spokesman Dr. Booranuch Samutrak said the government had lost its legitimacy to deliver the state policy, saying that the morning clash between police and protesters was against the

government's promise which vowed to solve the political turmoil through peaceful means.

At about 6am, police used tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters rallying at Parliament after the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) marched to Parliament on Monday night, extending its rally from Government House, and vowing to stop the government from delivering its policy statement.

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat took office September 25.

Unarmed, but heavily-protected with helmets, face masks and shields, hundreds of police moved through the barricades erected by the PAD activists overnight. Some 100 rounds of tear gas were fired into the ranks of the PAD demonstrators shortly after dawn, and the massed police formations moved across the site.

69 people were injured in the fray, including one man who reportedly lost his leg due to an exploding tear gas canister.

Meanwhile, PAD core leaders called on its supporters in provinces to join the protest at Government House while telling their supporters to stay clam inside the Government House compound.

PAD core leader Sondhi Limthongkul told demonstrators at Government House that the rally at Parliament would be their "final battle" and would not back off.

He also called for donations of water and medicines, particularly eye drops, to treat protesters who suffered from tear gas.

-- TNA 2008-10-07

And that after:

HM the Queen worried over police's use of tear gas on protesters

HM the Queen is very worried on the police's use of tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters at the Parliament.

"HM the Queen is very worried that the incident happened and that many people were injured during the incident," the director of the Vachira Hospital said.

The Queen donated Bt100,000 to Vachira Hospital where many injured protesters were treated.

The Royal Household Bureau informed the hospital to foot the bills of the injured protesters with the bureau.
