QANTAS was repeatedly warned about potential problems with elevation systems on an aircraft that plunged out of control, injuring 74 people.

The Singapore-Perth Airbus climbed steeply "of its own accord" then pitched rapidly downwards in a dramatic midair incident on Tuesday afternoon.

That's not a decent idea, there is very little conspiracy.

I think there was a second laptop on the grassy knoll.

Probably air lingus related.

The latest: they think a passengers laptop may have caused the problem.

They will say anything to save face at this stage

That adds an interesting twist to it. I dealt with similar problems many years ago. I can’t see any airline wanting to go through the musical actuator change routine. That’s of course if this is the reason behind the incident the other day.

I suppose it all boils down to what they find when they milk the ADR, what the investigation finds and if they can replicate the fault. I guess we’ll have to wait for the report. It’ll be interesting to see if other operators have had this problem and how they dealt or are dealing with it.

The spelling's not really important, but, QANTAS stands for Queensland And Northern Territories Air Service. Sure you knew, just thought I'd share.

Laptops 'did not cause Qantas drop'

There is no evidence to suggest the use of mobile phones or laptops was the cause of the latest Qantas safety incident, investigators say.

More than 70 people on Qantas flight 72 from Singapore to Perth were injured when the Airbus A330-300, carrying 303 passengers and 10 crew, suddenly dropped altitude on Tuesday.

Up to a dozen people were seriously hurt, including some with spinal injuries, after the sudden drop sent the plane into a nosedive, throwing passengers around the cabin.

A preliminary review of the data indicated the aircraft climbed about 200 feet from a cruising level of 37,000 feet before it pitched nose down and descended about 650 feet in about 20 seconds before returning to cruising level.

But the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has discounted suggestions the use of mobile phones and laptops interfered with the plane's onboard computer equipment.

"There is no evidence, at this stage, to indicate that the use of portable electronic devices by passengers contributed to the event," bureau spokesman Julian Walsh told reporters in Canberra on Friday.

SEVEN people were injured when a Qantas bus swerved to avoid an accident with another vehicle at Sydney Airport

So even on the ground they are in trouble

And if we use Gunga and Croc's logic, there is a chance that one of them on the bus was planning to fly to Thailand next year.

Computer fault caused Qantas plunge

October 14, 2008 06:47pm

AIR investigators say a faulty computer system was responsible for a terrifying mid-air plunge on a Qantas flight between Singapore and Perth last week.

A fault in the Airbus A330-300's air data inertial reference system is believed to have led to erroneous information being sent to its flight control computer, causing the autopilot to shut down.

The aircraft was cruising at 37,000 feet when the fault occurred, causing it to descend up to 650 feet in seconds.

I'd fly Qantas any day over a budget airline with second rate pilots and a reputation for leaving smoking holes in the ground.
