Ok this is for everyone considering coming to Penang. Udon asked me to do a brief report on the Hotel 1926.

The 1926 is a nice clean hotel. The room i stayed in was the standard room. it had everything i needed. Apart from the Sat Tv. it had a channel called vision 4. this channel had English speaking movies and docs. So there was no sport channel or music. Just this vision4. but this isn't a big deal. just something to think about if thats what you're looking for. The room was a resonable size. The toilet and shower were clean and they provide towels(which you would expect). The breakfast in the morning was good and enough to fill you for a couple of hours. The staff were great on my first night there. i only changed a couple of thousand baht at the airport (93Rm for 1000baht) and paid for my taxi. So when i was goona pay for one night they wanted a deposit also. (106Rm per night plus 44RM deposit) 150 RM all up. I could afford to pay this but would have left myself with not a lot to eat with. I asked the staff if there was a money exchange around. they siad it was too far. So anyway they gave me 100Rm back and told me to pay the next day. That was cool of them. Around the hotel there isn't much within walking distance. No visa agents. but its not too far from the Thai consulate if you want to do it yourself. As for eating. There is a small hawkers food area where you can eat cheaply and have a beer. The 1926 is a little way out of town. So found myself paying for taxis back to town to go for food and have a beer. The Hotel doesnt have amenities ie Internet, pool or decent bar. But is well worth it if you want a little relaxation and quiet. It was too quiet for me and after a couple of nights of getting taxis back to town. I decided to come and stay somewhere on Chulia st. Somewhere central and cheaper. But all in all the 1926 is good if you want peace and quiet and dont mind paying for cabs into town. you can walk but its a bit of a distance.

Better yet, the bus is RM 0.80 from the Hotel 1926 to the KOMTAR area and vice-versa. Any number of bus lines make that run such as the 93 and the 202 buses that serve Batu Ferringhi. Also, any of the mini-buses from town that serve Tanjung Bunga, Pulau Tikus or Tanjung Tokong pass right by the hotel.

A very cheap place called the Blue Diamond( i think). 30Rm a night for bed toilet, shower and fan. Not flash in any way but i have spent alot of money. so going for the cheap option. Penang is not that cheap really.

Not when compared to Thailand it isn't. When you're looking at 120B for a big beer even in basic places a night out can be pricey.

BTW if you like Indian food check out the two Muslim restaurants at the top of Chulia, and left a bit.

They're only hole in the wall places but they do Tandoori chicken, Honey Chicken with biriyani rice, Indian Breads and Mutton curry to die for. I can't remember the names but the second of the 2 was better last time I was there but both are worth checking out.

Hey Prof been there. Though the best curry i've had here and the last time i was here was the Indian at the end of Chulia.next to the cinema. The mutton vindaloo was awsome.

When I used to renew my visa in Penang I would stay in the Hang Chow GH at the top end of Chulia ( Cheap and Nasty), opposite there was a pretty tall hotel affair ( Hotel Penang/Malaysia maybe) with a bloody good Indian Restaurant in the basement. That was about 8 years back now , wonder if it's still there?

It certainly is still there, and also is considered one of the best Indian restaurants in Asia, the place has won many awards, I know its a long drive for a curry but I shall go there this month :D

If you are talking about the place below the Oriental Hotel (not what I would call a very tall hotel) I do find that very hard to believe (but admit I do not have a great deal of appreciation for Indian food in general). The one time I ate there half the food never arrived - what did (after 30 minutes) was not good (and I have some experience with about four years living in Dacca/Delhi/Madras and Calcutta).

But as udon said it is a case of taste - and it is not to mine. :D

IS the Grace Hotel still there? I recall staying there on a very short visa run.

The food yes, was fine. there was a nice trinket shop a Chinese shop that make chops for names in Chinese..

I wish I had more time to explore that area rather than doing the visa thang
