Check out this item. You can subscribe to the books of drugs or just order individual copies. I've just ordered the baht 460 current issue of MIMS Pharmacy Guide (latest issue).

It's sure handy when a clinic or hospital hands you a plastic bag of drugs with instructions for use, but doesn't tell you what they are. You can ask, then look them up at home to check interactions with other drugs you might be taking, precautions, etc.

In addition, you can look yourself for generic substitutes for brand name drugs. A couple years ago I bought a bottle of gastric reflux OTC medicine in the U.S., came back here and was looking for similar. Checked the MIMS book by ingredient, found some expensive stuff, but also found Xanadine, baht 90 for 100 tabs, 3+ worth!

Used to take Lipitor for cholesterol control, switched to Bestatin, generic of Zucor, baht 144 for 30 tabs, one month's worth, better than baht 60/tab!

The folks at MIMS Thailand are very helpful, Khuns Lek & Toi. I paid the baht 460 via ATM transfer to their bank account, and they post the book, postage included.

Their office somewhere on Sukumvit Soi 62 is really difficult to find, it's kind of an extension west across the Expressway. I found it once lots of years ago, not going to try again.

It's easy to easy that the 4 uppermost categories require a doctor's prescription and the lowest 3 are probably sold OTC. What about the 'D' category, OTC or not?

Posted

Yes, D is OTC (and the largest category) but only in pharmacy. Whereas NDD can be sold OTC in all sorts of shops

Upcountry, some of the smaller shops ran kai ya do not have a licensed pharamcist onm staff and thus will have only the NDD drugs.
