midas
I would appreciate any advice based on any similar experiences regarding the status of a 90 day entry stamp into Thailand after your passport is canceled when you obtain a new one ? I have had to get a new one not because it has reached its expiry date but only because so many countries use entire pages for their visas and I have run out of pages. The exisiting one still has not been canceled yet but they said it will be canceled when I collect the new one from the Embassy later this month. I dont have a visa in the passport which has to be moved ( that is a separate document ) so I am only concerned about the validity of the 90 day entry stamp itself which at the moment would not expire until mid January 2009. The last thing I would want in January is to be told at the airport I have overstayed on an expired stamp ?
Lite Beer
I have never been in this position, but from what I gather. You can go to Immigration and they will transfer the stamp to your new passport free of charge. The UK Embassy cut the corners off the pages of the old passport but leave the one with any valid stamps on. I would presume other countries do something similar. ubonjoe
If you have a multiple entry visa you will need to use your old passport along with your new passport until the visa expires. The same goes for you current entry stamp. When you leave show them your old passport that has your current entry and your new passport. Immigration will not transfer those over to a new passport. Lite Beer
I always understood that they will transfer permission to stay stamps but not Visas.
midas
Thank you very much guys ! that's a bit of a relief because I just entered the country recently and it only occurred to me today that I might have an invalid entry stamp after they cancel the existing passport ! I wish these countries wouldn't use whole pages for visas because otherwise i could have kept using it for a few more years! astral
I always understood that they will transfer permission to stay stamps but not Visas. This is correct. Immigration will only transfer your current entry stamp to the new passport. If you have a multi-entry visa you will need to present both old and new passport the next time you enter the country so that immigration can see the visa. The entry stamp will go in the new passport.
