Uk To Change Law On Foreigners Retirement

Recommended Posts

From the Daily Mail 5th November

"Foreigners will be banned from moving to Britain to retire, it has emerged.

The Home Office is scrapping rules that allow non-EU pensioners who have sufficient money to look after themselves to move to the UK after they have stopped working.

Officials said the policy did not fit in with the idea of 'earned citizenship'.

But it will raise concerns that countries whose citizens will lose out could retaliate by imposing similar restrictions of their own. "

I doubt very much that the change in UK’s policy regarding retirement of foreigners in the UK will have any effect on Thailand’s immigration policy regarding retirement in Thailand.

Don't be so quick to minimize the effects of this change in UK immigration policy. While it is true that people for centuries have fought to get out of the UK or to escape empire status perhaps a select few would actually want to retire there. This could be a simple excuse for this or a future Thai government administration to reduce the farang count or throw roadblocks up for retirees here. It could be an interesting development that could get a lot of play in Thai Visa in the near future. Some people get comfortable and sometimes forget TIT.

I've noticed that the possibility of a reintroduction of capital controls has been mentioned on several occasions in the last few weeks in the British press. With interest rates dropping through the floor and government borrowing going through the roof, it may be the only way to prevent a total collapse of Sterling. It may be wise to take the exchange rate hit now and move into Baht if you plan on staying in Thailand for a few years, rather than wait for the exchange rate to improve and then find that you can only change £500/trip, or whatever, in the future. Or maybe we should all enrol in TEFL courses ASAP? :o
