Hey all,

I'm struggling to get Swirly MMS configured on my iPhone, i was wondering if anyone has any success with this application? I think its something to do with the GPRS/Edge & MMS/APN settings... i've looked around the net and found some information, but none of the settings work for me...

... anyone have any advice, assistance or useful links for this?

Cheers!

I'm using SwirlyMMS on my iPhone 3G with AIS and it works nicely. You just need to enter the standard MMS settings from DTAC, and they should be able to provide those to you.

I found these settings for DTAC by googling. You can try them and see if they work for you:

APN = mms

Username = [leave blank]

Password = [leave blank]

MMSC = http://mms.dtac.co.th:8002/

Proxy : 203.155.200.133:8080

Great thanks, that seems to have worked... i got the 14 day license and activated Swirly.

What do you think about the application, is it worth it?

All i gotta do now is figure out why my new iPhone 3G keeps dropping the Edge/GPRS connection, i have to reboot the phone to get it to connect again :o

I guess if you want to do MMS, then Swirly is just about your only option. That said, I think it's a really good application, and an MMS displayed on an iPhone is very nice. SwirlyMMS only costs US$8, so I'd say it's definitely worth it if you plan on doing any MMS sending or receiving at all.

Not sure why your iPhone keeps dropping the GPRS connection. I guess it could be something to do with DTAC. Which software version are you using?

Also, if you still have the problem and have to reboot to re-establish a GPRS connection, trying going into settings and toggling the Airplane Mode setting on and off. That should do the same thing and takes a lot less time than rebooting.

Apparently the phone part of the iPhone (includes the GPRS/Edge modem) is absolutely horrible. In 3G countries, the iPhone drops to Edge where every other phone/PDA on the market can hold a full signal 3G connection.

This might be the problem, since when a GPRS connection is dropped in an abnormal way (e.g. loss of signal) instead of doing a real disconnect, it can take a while for the network to realize this, and until it realizes you are not connected anymore, it won't let you re-connect!

Rebooting the phone will log your GSM of the system and back on, clearing your erroneously registered gprs connection!

Edit:

Just saw the post of Bubba, and he is right, toggling between airplane mode and back to normal has the same effect, since it logs your phone of the network system and back on!

I have heard some reports of users having problems with GPRS, or more specifically 3G, but I don't think it's a pandemic worthy of calling the iPhone modem horrible. Personally, I have never had a problem using it in Thailand with an Edge connection, or in five other countries where I have used it on AIS roaming, including 3G connections. For sure, the iPhone does not universally drop to Edge from 3G.

My Previous iPhone (non 3g model) worked like a charm, never a problem - it was perfect!!!

But, i lost it (drunk, back of a taxi scenario!) and decided to get the 3G model as a replacement - some nice upgrades on the 3G (i like the built in VPN to name just one of the features) - its one of the MBK "Chip on top of the SIM" models :o I beleive the firmware/OS version is 2.1. Works great except for the loss of GPRS connection, seems to happen about an hour after the connection has been established (but im not sure if there is a pattern there as i haven't timed it)

I will try the airplane mode hack and see if it works

Are you using DTAC or AIS? I wonder if there is a problem specific to DTAC, as I have no problem with AIS.

Also, I suppose it would be possible that the "chip on top of SIM" hack to get the phone unlocked could have something to do with it.

I'm on DTAC

My previous phone was the same configuration (i.e. Chip on top of the SIM) and i didn't have this problem, i was on DTAC before as well... so i'm tempted to say its not a DTAC problem and possibly not a 'Chip on top of the SIM' problem either... leading me to believe it is either a flaw in the phone or a setting somewhere.

I wonder if this might help, if you haven't already tried it: Try Settings>General>Network and then toggle off Enable 3G. Since there's no real 3G in Thailand now anyway, it won't make any difference with your GPRS/Edge. Maybe there is something with your iPhone looking for 3G and not finding it?
