Pools or any water is a like a magnet to children, the safest thing is teach them to swim from a very early age, I have been amazed at some toddlers who can just about walk, but who are so confident in the water.

Wineaux,

to get back to your original enquiry, in 36 years of messing with pools I have never come across any alarm equipment specially designed for pools. There is an extremely sophisticated piece of electronic equipment that detects motion in water that is used in the fishery industry, but the cost would probably be prohibitive. Most people with domestic pools just make sure they can keep an eye on the thing from the kitchen window, or put a stainless steel patio type fence around them.

The easiest solution which some people use to keep strangers from free skinny dipping by moonlight, is to mount some motion detectors on the steel fence. This would work for kids too, but it is no substitute for the moral obligation of any pool owner to keep a watchful eye and personally ensure that non-swimmers keep out of it and that young children are not allowed near it without adult supervision.

That said, we are living in a country where nine-year-olds drive to school on their own motorcycles...

Pool alarms and/or approved security fences have been required in France by law since 2006. It seems they are fairly common in other parts of Europe, USA and Australia as well. I have now found a supplier in Australia but would like to know if anyone already distributed them in the S.E Asia region.

I am still looking for a company that has some experience of installing pool fences and/or nets/covers.

That's interesting because I certainly don't have any alarms round my rather large pool in Sauveterre , and nobody has been around from the mairie to tell us about any new laws.

But nobody has ever fallen into it and drowned yet either...

Actually it seems it was passed in 2003 not 2006. Perhaps you have a fence or approved cover?

Under French law, all pool owners are required to prevent unsupervised access to the pool by children under the age of five. Respect it.

The Act of 3 January, 2003 pertaining to swimming pool safety, consolidated by the implementing order of 31 December 2003, requires that in France and in French overseas departments and territories, all sunken or semi-sunken outdoor swimming pools be fitted with a safety system (i.e. an alarm, barrier, shelter or cover) that complies with applicable standards. This Act applies to all existing pools, irrespective of their use or year of construction. In application of Articles L128-1 and subsequent articles, and R128-1 and subsequent articles of the Construction Code, owners of pools built or installed after 1 January 2004 are required to have had them fitted with a system intended to prevent drowning accidents no later than when the pool is filled, or, if the work to install such accident prevention systems requires the pool to be filled in advance, no later than the date of completion of work for the pool.

getting back on topic it seems that Desjoyaux have some regional offices in Thailand. They do not stock pool covers here but can order them from France.
