Train services resume after Southern Thailand track blasts

SONGKHLA: -- Regular passenger train services have resumed amid tight security between the city of Hat Yai and southern border town of Su-Ngai Kolok.

Services on the main line to Malaysia were disrupted yesterday after a series of trackside bomb blasts blamed on militants.

The early morning explosions appeared to be aimed at routine security patrols. They occurred almost simultaneously in the three southern provinces of Yala, Songkla and Pattani. No one was injured in the attacks.

Before services re-started this morning, the area was inspected by members of the security forces. The first Su-Ngai Kolok-bound express train left Hat Yai Railway Station in Songkla at 6 a.m.

The Hat Yai Railway Station manager Mr.Amnaj Channgulerm said services resumed after negotiations between a union and railway authorities to ensure the safety of railway staff and passengers.

“Security measures are being stepped up on trains and in stations. They’ll include thorough checks on passengers’ belongings and more patrols along the route. Police and soldiers will also be deployed on each train to guarantee passengers’ safety,” said Mr.Amnaj.

I certainly hope the Thai authorities can get this situation down south under control. If or when the extremists take the fight to the tourist cities of Phuket and Pattaya, then the shit will have truly hit the fan. If we get Bali type explosions in the tourist areas, Thailand's effort to attract more upscale visitors will be fruitless. The number of visitors here will fall like they did in Bali. A very difficult and dangerous situation for the Thais and farangs alike.
