I read in one of the Yahoo groups I follow about an expat who got stranded in Argentina when Chilean government workers went on strike. I guess the immigration folks down there are civilians. The police may not be allowed (?) to strike here in Thailand, but I remember on more than one occasion when the border with Burma was closed. I'm not sure about Cambodia.

But if it happened, and you got stranded .. and really needed to get back, would you cross illegally? I think that might be fraught with danger .. illegal entry into Thailand. Has it happened to anyone?

Tachilek might not be a good place to get stranded. :o

For sure you'd just have to do whatever was necessary and try to sort it out later. Presumably not all borders and airports would be closed so you would have some options left to escape legally !

I don't know about Burma, but if I was stranded in Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia after they closed the land borders I'd take a flight to Bangkok before considering an illegal entry. If the airport was closed, then I'd fly home and wait for things to settle down before returning.

Maybe you'd prefer to swim across the Mekong if it happened in Laos, but I wouldn't do it.
