Living In Mae Salong

Featured Replies

I have spent some time in Thailand, mostly in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rae, but I have never found my Eden. Outside of an internet connection I need little comforts. I speak Mandarin some since I lived in China for seven years; are there still a lot of Chinese speakers in Mae Salong? Also, are modest inexpensive homes available to rent?

I'd suggest a trip up there to check it out for yourself. Local inquiries will probably be more productive than trying to find a house in a place like Mae Salong on the internet.

I would imagine there would be Chinese speakers up there, particularly among the older people.

Everyone on Doi Mae Salong mountain speaks Chinese and it is beautiful and has cool weather.

Not many farangs though.

Sure you can get cheap homes, Mae Salong is sleepy as sleepy can be! The local artist has a great little house/location. Beautiful views!

To be honest, the town shuts down at dusk, and reopens at 5am with the hill tribes/old ladies opening the little market. Other than that i think i would go stir crazy!

I did see some old chinese folk who looked like they used to be the opium mafia... little bit scary. But yes, its close to paradise!

Wierdest thing is having a luxury hotel, with a great pool... you walk to the edge of the pool area... and 10 feet below is a real 'hill tribe'settlement... not a breeze block in sight... naked kids playing in the dirt..

An old dentist pal of mine used to come over and spend a lot of time there. He told me that he had many young girlfriends there and had the time of his life. (I won't relate all he told me as it will be censored!)

He was scottish and unsurprisingly very kee-niw, so I reckon his pleasures did not deprive him of too many satangs!

Yes, it is a lovely place, and very much cooler at it's highish altitude, to visit very nice, but reside there -?????

I wondered why Ulysses G was so taken with the place.

Cool weather indeed! :o

Very many. I knew of several Thais in CR who went to Maesalong on a regular basis to learn Mandarin.

Just curious .. what do former opium mafia look like?
