Hi Guys

A mouse (probably a mouse) seems to have taken up residence in my roof space and is making a meal out of my electrical wiring, with not unexpected results!

An electromagnetic deterrer has so far achieved nothing - no real surprise there - so I need to use other methods. I've managed to get hold of what is probably warfarin so this may work. However, there's nothing beats a good old-fashioned mechanical mouse trap. The problem is that I can't seem to buy one. This is probably because of the Buddhist aversion to killing things, although the supermarkets do stock some rather less than humane stuff for getting rid of rats. This is basically a very stick goo that the rat gets stuck onto and subsequently starves to death. I don't fancy this method very much.

So, has anyone out there managed to source a mouse trap, humane or otherwise? I'm in the Pattaya area and haven't found anything in the supermarkets or in True Value, where I was told that traps are to be found but not so it seems. Obviously I have more places to try but if someone knows where something suitable is available then I would be grateful for a response. I'm getting fed up with re-setting my Safe-T-Cut several times a day and getting even more fed up with replacing chewed wiring!

Thanks,

DM

Been looking for years for a 'mouse trap' never found one over here - only the brown paper with glue.

I always put any cabling into pipes now to stop the buggers

Go to Carrefour or foodland (not sure there). They have mouse trap with glue.Put some food on it and bingo.

Works perfectly for me.2 or 3 rats after 1 night when I hear them in the ceiling :o

If you are sure they are small mice and not rats and you're looking for a catch-and-release humane solution, I have found this type of trap very effective (three caught on consecutive nights this week and relesed on the oposite side of the canal).

Never had cause to look for them in LOS, but high street hardware stores in the UK have them.

I warn you regarding the warfarin.....if the mouse hides somewhere before it dies it smells terrible.

There are traps which catch the mouse alive and we used them successfully (former house and we left the traps there, else I would send you).

using them is human and efficient just you need to bring the mouse away to a far place.

they bought the traps at a local market.

ALL hardware shops in my corner of Isaan sell 2 types -- instant decapitation ones for 10baht and cages around 30. The latter type will even take the huge ones you see all the time running around BKK.

Yes, theres three types I have seen thus far in the Kingdom.

Glue Tray; bought in the supermarket. Bait it. Catch the mouse and then drop the tray and the mouse in a bucket of water. Not very humane. But don't leave the poor fellow suffering for two long.

Spring block; tom and Jerry style trap. I have seen these outside of Bangkok in markets. Again you end up killing the mouse, but it's quick and, one would imagine, painless.

Cage; Metal cage with spring loaded door. Once the mouse takes the bait the cage is closed and you can let the mouse run free to destroy some other poor chaps electrical wiring. Again these are found in markets.

Decide which type of trap you want and ask around where to find them.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I guess I'll take a look in the local market - I would have thought that that would be the last place to find 'killing' traps though, what with 95% of the customers being Buddhist. Now I just have to look up the Thai for 'mousetrap' - possibly 'gap-dak nu' is something like it.

I think you find that Buddhism and "Thai Buddhism" are too very different ways of thinking.

I can't, off the top of my head, think of any one animal apart from the Elephant that the average Thai would have any worries about killing for food, profit or pest control.

Yep. I did write the "average Thai"

Why she keep a snake in a safe anyway...?? To help protect the cash and gold inside??

Sorry, couldn't resist.
