Then why take over the airport at create such national financial carnage. Also those more knowledgeable please correct me here, but doesn't Sondhi's business empire have serious financial problems? Don't suppose they will all go away if/when he topples the government? :o

I guess you didn't notice that the PAD has (so far) prevented the PPP from amending the Constitution....

but is Sondhi's business empire currently in trouble?

I read that somewhere but honestly don't know, which is why I asked for the better informed to correct if wrong. If incorrect according to yourself then my apologies for being wrong.

No negotiation: Sondhi declares

Sondhi Limthongkul, No-1 leader of People's Alliance for Democracy, told protesters not to believe that the People's Alliance for Democracy would give in and negotiate with police to move protesters out of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang Airport .

"PAD leaders will never negotiate with police," Sondhi told the crowd at the government House.

Sondhi also warned police not to listen to orders from Interior Minister Kowit Wattana, saying the People Power Party would be dissolved by the Constitution Court after December 2 and the House would be dissolved and Kowit would lose power.

The nation

Looks like the police are listening to Sondhi as they have now had to remove the national police chief. sensible guy, he will get to spend time on the golf course instead of wondering what moment of madness made him listen to the last words of a dying government exiled in Chiang Mai. Such political bravery they have shown.

Excellent point, playing golf is more important than the destruction of the economy, tourism and job losses (not the elite of course) this madness is causing. He may even get a retrenched former hotel manager as his caddy. Some positions in life require you to do what is right and fulfill the obligations to your job, and not what is expedient for social sports. A point that sadly eludes you. If he were actually concerned about PAD injuries then having the guts to take charge and ensure such would be the honorable thing to do.

Why can't people get past their uninvited political affiliations and see the harm this is causing. Not to the ring leaders but to the nation. And what will change with a new government, no more corruption eh, wake up.

Actually its you who misses the point, "Some positions in life require you to do what is right and fulfill the obligations to your job," agreed and if your leaders also fulfilled their responsibilities instead of hiding away in Chiang Mai you might be prepared to carry out your responsibilities.

Sondhi's in debt big time - to the tune of around 10 billion baht. So whoever is bankrolling the PAD must have large enough coffers to cover his debts if he gets rid of the PPP on their behalf.

THAILAND: Media Group Fails to Meet Debt Restructuring Plan

Posted: 2008-11-20

Thailand's Manager Media Group Plc (MGR) today allowed creditors to seize its assets, including equipment and Manager newspaper titles, after failing to meet the requirements of its court-supervised business rehabilitation plan, reports Woranuj Maneerungsee of 'Bangkok Post'.

The newspapers will be reborn under the ASTV Manager identity with 'Manager Daily' being named ASTV Manager Daily. The Group's two other publications, 'Manager Weekly' and 'Manager Monthly', will also add the same ASTV prefix to their names.

The Manager Group began its debt restructuring in 1999. The group's debts totalled more than 10 billion baht (284,104,000 U.S. dollars) across more than a dozen companies. MGR alone has debts of about 3.9 billion baht (111,263,600 dollars).

A member of the editorial staff at 'Manager Daily' denied the newspaper operation was dying. He said all newspapers would come under the new brand similar to the group's ASTV satellite TV.

"We have been told that no one will be laid off. More than 200 employes will resign from MGR and then apply to work for Asia Satellite TV or ASTV," he added.

Hello Everyone,

Just getting uptodate with the news..whats happening to the country? Why can't they cut power to parts of the airport - pictures show PAD supporters charging 100s of phones, cooking, resting, like some sort of party.

This is really going to have such a negative impact of the country's image...over here in the UKs is only because the India thing happened that its no longer on TV - until blood shed happens.

This is terrorism now surely? Therefore the govn can't back down and force willn't be viewed a negatively for the rest of world. All we saw here a few days back were poor families and childs/babies stuck in no mans land!

Hope someone sees sense soon!!!!

That is a reasonably fair critique in a perfect world. What bothers me though is that what countries give the police and army the "right" to disobey orders if it crosses their political opinions? The job of the police is to enforce the law, not choose to ignore that because you agree with the politics of a law breaker.

Even on this forum there is divided opinion, what about in Thai society? Who is wrong and who is right? Neither, it is about what side you support. Both are 100% right in their own minds. Guess that is why they say to maintain harmony don't discuss politics or religion, they are emotive issues.

Because I criticize PAD more than the government that doesn't mean I have any respect for the governmnet whatsoever, they are <deleted>. I just think the PAD are going about things in a wrong and destructive way. Both sides agenda is to benefit themselves, I sincerely wish a middle way could be found.

Radio 4 regularly features it - although as about the 4th or 5th item. But they all just seem bewildered by what's happening. The best that they could come up with this morning was some "expert" professor in Asian affairs who told us about as much as any occasional visitor to THAIVISA could.

I hope that you're wrong about the bloodbath. But it seems to me that they're looking for some kind of martydom and wont give it up until they get it. Trouble is that they don't realise that the rest of the world don't like passenger air traffic being held up without just cause at the best of times.

JDAsia, this is what I was alluding to before, please, you have said this is false, please also respond to this poster and teach him the errors of his beliefs. Because in all fairness this is an important issue re PAD credibility.

BBC are reporting the PAD's supply lines to Suvarnabhumi have been effectively stopped by the police. If that's true and continues to hold true, it would seem unlikely they will be able to survive in there for very much longer.

Can't see how they could confirm that when Jonathan Head is still sipping G & T's on his 5* condo balcony ! that man should stop reading Clancy and report facts.

Because the people that run the power grid are on the PAD side. They have been cutting power supplies to the government.

For god's sake man stop taking drugs and pull yourself together. The airport is full of stranded tourists. Do really think its a good idea to start a riot in there?

but those are 1999 numbers right? (yes the article was written in 2008) --- what is the current situation?

Amazing if a debt in 1999 can still be operative in 2008

Try having a 30 year mortgage. Most banks consider any debt operative just as long as you havent paid them back

About time something is done. PAD are terrorist causing ireversable damage each day they continue to hold the country for ransom. Hopefully tonight the airports are cleared and all the stranded foreigners can go home. We all see now what criminals PAD are. We dont need any more proof.

PAD are holding the ace card

Send in the police and we will cause enough damage to keep this Airport closed for weeks.

thats a great idea..... wonder who thought of that...

unfortunately there is only one way out of this terrible situation now and those people who took the airports illegally are going to pay a very heavy price!

Cutting the supply lines is a good idea, has worked in seige warfare for centuries, I think the mongols were the first to perfect it.........

Why can't they cut power to the airport? I know PAD must have generators, but it would help.

Can you imagine the mess to clear up in the airport when this is all over? Who is going to foot the bill?

The leaders of PAD should be put in jail and bankrupted and the money given to the state.

Imagine how many jobs at the airport alone are at risk sue to their crazy antics.

Gravelrash -- see post 128

then point out where I said it was not true when responding to you

then explain how Sondhi's business's financial standings relate to the PAD? (again the restructuring of his businesses seems to date from 1999)

I've met him and face to face he is full of sh*te I wonder why the BBC employs him. His real vocation in life should have been the features editor for Woman's Own

And before you ask I neither support PAD or the other morons but I do support the believe that any country should be run by those most able and qualified. One man one vote is drivvel put forward by those with socialistic ideals but wool between their ears. Proof - then look at USA electing Bush, UK electing Thatcher, and of course Thailand electing Toxin.
Do you live here full time or will you be returning to North Korea soon?

No chance - even North Korea has higher standards than admitting boofheads such as this.
