To Cancel Or Not To Cancel?

Ive got a trip planned for Thailand in slightly over two weeks time and i am unsure of a few things at the moment.

Firstly, i am not sure if the international airport will be open, or more like open long enough in that time for my plane to land in BKK. I understand that no one knows the answer to this question. But is it possible for it to be closed for that long?

Secondly, what are the various ways this situation could play out? Lets say the Airport is open and running, should I still go to Thailand? Will there be enough unrest that tourists should refrain from going? or will you be ok if you avoid hotspots?

If there is a coup, is that a good thing for me? or will the pro government supportors clash with the PAD? I have read that the pro government supporters have had a few rallies themselves, what is the feeling in Thailand? Is there going to be a civil war?

At this moment In time I will give this maybe a couple of days and see how things go before making any major decicions, but I am considering canceling my flight and choosing a different destination.

So, what are my chances? :o

It is like death alley here right now. A tank is crashing through my bathroom and bullets are flying above my head as I write this reply. There are packs of dogs eating the corpses of dead white tourists, who have not been taken to be sold as slave gimps at the open market at Mo Chit.

Obviously, if you can avoid being taken hostage when you land at the military airport then you need to make a run for the Government House, it is the only safe location right now in the city. Bring the family, but don't forget to wear covert body armour. As a Brit, you are like a bullet magnet.

I may not be able to reply any further as an armoured scorpion light tank is taking out my communication capabilities.

But on the bright side, there are quite cheap tickets to the Kylie Minogue concert tonight. Just don't go unarmed.

I would say your chances are better than 50/50. Just kiss your family goodbye in case you don't make it back.

ya, i dont really take a political stand. It is a Thai issue, not mine, and its rather complicated.

Crikey, it's not like a tourist to show no interest in the country they are visiting...

It must come as a shock to find the window smashed in the air conditioned limousine life you live in the core West. You see none of the wretched poverty that you help to create, notice none of the suffering, that you do nothing to alleviate. Just so long as little Lucy and John have a well-deserved rest in a paradise island to recover from their stressful (and mind-numbing) lives of 9-5 in a paper factory in Slough.

I suggest you look into the matter a little more.

You neglected to mention the anti aircraft defenses that are being set up. He would need to bring a parachute in case the plane is hit while circling over the airport.

Still, I hear that tourists are being exempted from sand bag filling duties which is a nice concession.

I do show interest in the country im visiting, but from all that I have read it doesnt seem to be so clear cut as to who the bad guys are in this situation. On one side you have the middle class and business elites, and on the other the largely rural Thai. Is the government really corrupt? Can you provide proof of this? It doesnt appear that the government is ruthlessly killing civilians or starving thousands of people.

If you refrain from visiting a country because the government has been accused of being corrupt, there wouldnt be many countries to choose from would there?

What would refraining from visiting Thailand really accomplish? Would it really accomplish the ousting of the current leader? And if it does, what will come of it? The majority are not going to vote PAD.

Not a fully fledged spy as yet then , my name is Bond , James Bond , welcome to a newcomer to our branch of world buisness .

In reality , i personally would give it a few more days of perusal before making a commitment to visit thailand until you see how things pan out , it is not as bad as some news agencies make it out to be , but it is presenting an ever changing collidoscope of events . With the Thai cultural phsyce , it is difficult to forecast what may happen or not happen next , there is obviously no one responsible at the helm of the country at this time , so please be cautious .

it's unfortunate that mods should allow such blatant, continous trolling w/o being challenged

re: airport re-opening, it'll take some time to clear all those cancelled flights and repatriate stranded tourists. So even if Suvarnbhumi were to re-open tomorrow morning, it'll be chaotic there. At the moment nobody really knows how things will pan out. One thing for sure, there is and will be lots of resentment towards PAD and its supporters, from ordinary Thais and foreign visitors, anyone who has interest in the country. That'll take years if never to recover from.

Your chances are that any or all of the things you mentioned are possible.

Just cancel and go somewhere else "like Hawaii". Then you will be sure not to have you're travel plans upset. (leastways not unless there is another Pearl Harbour)

Trying to drum up support for your PAD buddies?

Didn't work, did it:

I really find the die hard Thai apologists strange. Stranger than the PAD and police working together to protest the government. I think Thailand could have nuclear fallout and they'd be saying how it enhances the taste of the Som Tam.
